There’s nothing like the bond between a responsible pet owner and their pooch. You know the saying about dogs being man’s best friend? It’s true. As long as these animals are loved and cared for, they’ll do anything for their humans.
Playtime
Besides walking, cuddling, and napping, dogs have another favorite pastime. They love to play. For most of them, that includes taking trips to the local dog park, enjoying a game of fetch with their owners, and even swimming.
Outstanding swimmers
Most dog breeds are exceptional swimmers. They take to it naturally and love spending time in the water. But this type of play isn’t for all dogs. As a matter of fact, it could prove deadly for some.
Dogs that can’t swim
Certain dogs can’t swim. That includes those with small hindquarters and broad chests, dogs with short legs, and those with short muzzles. Some of those breeds include the Boxer, Basset Hound, Dachshund, Pug, Pekinese, and the Bulldog.
What about puppies?
Especially for puppies of these breeds, water is dangerous. That’s why when playing around a pool with a young dog and one that can’t swim, the owner needs to keep a close watch on them.
A harrowing tale
In a 2018 video, a scary event happens. Viewed almost 1.5 million times, it serves as a good reminder to always keep puppies in sight, just like small children.
Hanging out by the pool
In the backyard of a man’s house is a swimming pool with an adjacent hot tub. Initially, this guy and his two French Bulldogs are running around and having fun. But as soon as he reaches the deep end, something takes place on the other side.
The puppy slips
Between the pool and the Jacuzzi is a small step. As the puppy races after his owner, he slips into the hot tub. Immediately, he goes under. You can see him struggling and hear the water splashing around.
Completely submerged
Although the man reaches the dog quickly, from the time it went into the water until he gets there, he’s completely submerged. It might’ve only been a few seconds but when watching the video, it feels like minutes.
Making sure the pup’s okay
After pulling the puppy out of the water, the man sets him down and begins patting his back. While it’s kind of hard to see on the video, the second dog is running around as if worried.
One lucky dog
After shaking the water off, the puppy appears to be fine. He then joins the second pooch while the owner climbs out of the water. If this man hadn’t been there, the outcome would’ve been very different.
This video teaches all pet owners several things. First, the French Bulldog, which is what this man has, isn’t a good swimmer. Second, if dogs are left outside alone where there’s a pool, it’d be a good idea to have some kind of safety feature in place. Third, if you don’t know doggie CPR, this would be a great time to learn.
