Animal abandonment has always been present ever since humanity knew how to domesticate animals.
But what sets one case apart from the other are the reasons for doing so and the conditions where these poor animals were abandoned into. Some might have to leave their pets behind during a hasty evacuation.
Some might have surrendered their pets because they couldn’t take care of them anymore. But there are some who just abandon their pets like they’re a piece of garbage to be discarded.
This is what happened to this poor little critter when a man found him crawling beside a discarded shoe.
Goran Marinkovic always had a soft spot for animals.
The Serbian native has been taking good care of stray animals by feeding them. However, in one of his usual feeding runs, he stumbled upon a small ball of fur wobbling around a piece of sneaker.
Around the little puppy was trash and plastic garbage. There’s no shelter. Not even a piece of plywood where it could go under. The only thing that could protect him from the elements is the shoe. He could climb in it for warmth but that’s about it.
As Marikovic also noted that the puppy was all alone. No mother dog to take care of him, and no person to take him home.
The puppy was in bad shape.
His fur was dirtied and a bit wet. He also looked scrawny and weak. If it was left here all alone to fend for himself, Marikovic could only assume that this little puppy hasn’t eaten anything.
He fed the small critter, but unfortunately for the two other puppies with him, it was already too late. He also gave the puppy a pill for parasites so it could have a better fighting chance of living.
Marinkovic knew he can’t leave the puppy behind.
If he abandons the puppy like the owner before him, he will surely not make it. At first, he made a Facebook post to see if anyone could take him in.
“His shoes can be useful to him, to hide from the rain and the sun. This rock was thrown into the garbage, I found it by accident, it would be nice if we found him someone who could and would want to take care of him.” The post said.
When no one took him, Marinkovic decided to keep him instead. He called the puppy Smesten.
It was a long way to recovery, but Marinkovic was adamant to provide the dog the care he needed.
The days of lying helpless on the grass and dirt were no more. It was now replaced by warm rugs and warm meals. Instead of a shoe, he was placed inside a house where he can run around and play. He even got a small stuffed toy to play with.
After almost a year, Smesten emerged as a different dog compared to when Marinkovic first found him. His fur is vibrant, his body is healthy, and most of all, Smesten looked happy.
With his act of kindness, Marinkovic hopes that owners should be more responsible especially when they took the responsibility of keeping pets.
There are still a lot of abandoned pets everywhere, but thanks to people like Marinkovic, some of them got to live full and happy lives.
