Abbi and Abe, two adorable siblings from Puerto Rico, found themselves in a New York shelter.
While Abbi quickly found a home, Abe was left waiting for his forever family.
At the office, where pets often visit, Abe caught the attention of John Handem Piette, a senior editor.
John was drawn to Abe’s beautiful black coat and lively spirit.
Abe, being fostered by one of John’s colleagues, was a hit with everyone, and they were thrilled when he was adopted.
However, the joy was short-lived as Abe was soon returned.
The office was disheartened, especially John, who couldn’t understand why this loving, obedient dog was struggling to find a home.
“There was something about his eyes,” John reflected.
Hope flickered again when Abe found another home, and the staff celebrated, hoping this time it would stick.
But, to John’s dismay, Abe was returned once more.
Determined to uncover the reason, John decided to take Abe home.
John and his girlfriend renamed Abe as Bean, after Kobe Bryant’s middle name, hoping for a new beginning.
John was committed to Bean, ready to work through any issues.
“I knew what he’d been through and I just wanted him to know that until we found him a forever home, he wasn’t going anywhere,” John said.
It didn’t take long for John to realize the extent of Bean’s energy and the probable reason for his returns.
Bean was a whirlwind of destruction, chewing and chasing everything in sight.
Despite this, John and his girlfriend remained patient, helping Bean adjust to his new life.
The trio relocated to John’s parents’ house in New Hampshire.
This new environment brought firsts for Bean – his first encounter with snow and his first swim.
“Good boy! I’m gonna cry,” John exclaimed during Bean’s swimming milestone.
Bean found a new passion in running alongside John, a perfect outlet for his boundless energy.
However, the real test of Bean’s obedience came with John’s parents’ cats.
Tigger quickly warmed up to Bean, but Simba was less enthusiastic.
Eventually, Bean won over both cats, and they became inseparable.
Bean’s presence also had a heartwarming effect on John’s mother, who was recovering from breast cancer.
His energy and affection brought joy and healing to the family. John reflected on their journey with Bean, “He’s taught us so much already.
When times are tough and things don’t work out the first time, or even the second time, things will eventually work out.
He’s definitely found his forever family. I’m so glad we chose each other.”
