Dogfighting is a cruel ‘sport,’ and while it is illegal, it unfortunately does still happen in underground rings. Thankfully, there are many rescue organizations working to stop this heinous act from happening. And there are also some hopeful stories of dogs escaping from these rings and finding happiness.

This is one of those stories.

One warm May day, a five-month-old pit bull mix puppy suddenly collapsed after wandering onto a stranger’s porch.

The puppy had suffered life-threatening wounds and tears to his head and neck as a result of being part of an illegal dogfighting ring. After discovering the pet, the stranger immediately contacted Unleashed Pet Rescue in Topeka, Kansas, who quickly dispatched a team to save the puppy.

A female staffer became the puppy’s savior – quite appropriate given it was Mother’s Day.

When the woman first found the puppy, he hardly resembled an animal.

He was so beat up that his eyes were shut and there were big gashes across his neck. The woman worried the dog wasn’t going to make it — until he started thumping his tail a bit. Despite everything he’d been through, he still trusted people.

The woman decided to visit the puppy every night until the day he went to his foster home.

The staffer says, “It has got to be the worst emotional feeling there could ever be. How could someone do that, and let that happen?”

With each night under full care, the puppy’s health improved. His eyes began to open, and he could finally smile.

The staffer was so happy to see that the puppy was improving.

“Every night, his eyes were opening, and he was just smiling,” she said.

After two weeks, the puppy was well enough to go to a foster home. He was also given a name: Jax.

“We named him Jax because it means ‘God is gracious,'” Jax’s foster mom said.

It’s incredible to see Jax’s recovery and to see him walking with his foster mom. His foster mom said that when he first came in he couldn’t walk — all he could do was wag his tail.

“Now, he runs and plays and loves life,” Jax’s foster mom said.

The video ends with an important message from the staffer who helped Jax:

“If you think there’s dogfighting going on, don’t just turn eye, don’t turn your back and walk away.”

This is an important and very true message. The Humane Society has more information on what to do if you suspect dogfighting is happening. You can read about it here.

We’re so glad that Jax is doing well after his ordeal and that he’s with people who care about him and want to help him get better.
