A YouTuber by the name of Auriel Rudnick has managed to accumulate over 15 million views on one video alone since she uploaded it in March of 2014.

Why? Well, because we love to watch dogs being cute.

Buddies

Rudnick had two Golden Retrievers at the time – one who looks like a senior pooch and a puppy. They seem to be pretty good friends as far as we can see in the video – or at the very least, the puppy is pretty attached to the older dog.

At just 55 seconds long, it’s hard at first to tell why so many people have watched a video of what appears to just be two dogs sleeping. Sure, the puppy all cuddled up in the big dog’s belly is cute, but not necessarily worthy of 15 million views.

It’s only when the big dog seems to be having an active dream (or, perhaps, a bad dream as the video title suggests) that things pick up.

Big dreams

The older dog moves a bit in its sleep and you can see its stomach twitch. And that happens to be right where the puppy had laid its head.

Upon getting that wake-up, the puppy seems confused at first. To be fair, we look just as confused when we’re awoken from a deep sleep!

You’re probably familiar with the sleep twitch – humans do it too. But in dogs, it’s much more common among seniors and puppies. That’s because the part of their brain called the Pons doesn’t function properly all the time. The Pons is responsible for making sure your body doesn’t act out your dreams while you’re asleep.

According to the AKC:

“You may have noticed that puppies and older dogs twitch and move a lot in their sleep. This is because the pons is underdeveloped in puppies and less efficient in older dogs…The same is true for human infants and older adults.”

Wake-up call

Of course, the puppy in the video has no idea what’s going on. It only knows that something seems wrong with its friend.

He gets up and stares at the older dog’s belly, then goes to check on him, getting in his face just to make sure all is well.

That doesn’t seem to affect the napping at all.

But the puppy is still concerned – and since we have video of the moment, we know there’s a human standing by recording all this.

The puppy walks up to mom and seemingly demands to know what’s going on. But no such luck.

“Hey you with the camera! You going to do anything? No? I guess it’s up to me then,” joked a commenter about the interaction.

Apparently, mom is going to keep filming.

I’ll do it myself

The puppy isn’t going to let its pal suffer (if that’s even what’s happening here). So after giving up on a human intervention, the little ones goes back to lend some support.

Sniffing at its older sibling’s face, it seems like there’s no wake-up on the horizon.

So what does the puppy do? It sweetly curls up right on the older dog’s head.
