For most of us, we can only imagine the pain of being imprisoned.
The thought of being held in one place the size of a small room terrifies us. So why do we impose such on animals that rely on our love and affection?
We see dogs chained to trees, chained to small shacks in deplorable conditions, chained to fences where their only world is where the leash could take them. They never knew how the world looked and felt. They missed out on a lot and all of a sudden, they are scarred for life.
This is what Takis, a rescuer from Greece, encountered.
Theoklitos Proestakis, more affectionately known in his locality and online as Takis, was once a disc jockey. He gave up his craft to establish an animal shelter.
The shelter was envisioned to take in dogs who were abandoned especially when Greece was hard-hit by a financial crisis. Suddenly, a lot of owners can no longer afford to take care of their dogs so they gave them up.
Since then, Takis was known to rescue abandoned dogs.
For this rescue, he received a call from a woman. She said that she saw a dog chained up in a small wooden dog house.
Takis went up to the area to investigate. With the small information he has, he didn’t know what to expect.
There, he found Libby, terrified and shaking.
Libby was chained to the small shack where she could at least walk her immediate area. But when Takis found her, she was staying in the back corner of her wooden house.
Her head was bowed low, and if not, she was always trying to avert her gaze away from the man she just met. She doesn’t know his intentions, even if it’s for her own good. All she knows is she might be in danger.
Takis was heartbroken by the scene.
Libby was baring her teeth whenever Takis and his team got a bit too close for comfort. When Takis tried to find more information, he learned that Libby was chained all her life. She never knew how the world looked for the past 6 years.
He knew he can’t leave her in deplorable conditions such as this. This is the only life she knew so she’s scared to anything or anyone who tries to help her.
They decided to take her with them.
Three months later, Libby’s legs were taking her to great distances. What was once a snarling terrified dog became a pet that was so obsessed with life. She wanted to go everywhere. She wanted to make new friends.
But friends aren’t the only thing she got. Takis had just rescued three orphaned puppies. The once chained dog approached the litter and began looking after them. She might have lived alone but her motherly instincts quickly took hold. Soon enough, the puppies were following her.
All 10 puppies grew up big and healthy, thanks to Libby who took great care of them.
Libby was now living a purposeful life.
She has since been adopted and is currently staying in Germany where she’s free and healthy.
The life she lived is far away now and the only things she knows are big yards, green grass, and people who love her dearly.
