We’ve all been sick before. There are few things worse than feeling like absolute (choose your expletive) and knowing there isn’t anything you can do about it! You get to a certain point where you are resigned to finishing an entire season of your favorite show and drinking a whole 6-pack of ginger ale by yourself.
When we were kids, we had it made.
Now that we are adults, being sick is the worst. When we were kids, however, it was the best! Even though we didn’t feel the greatest, having our moms make us tomato soup and grilled cheese while we stayed home from school was awesome.
Honestly, having someone around to take care of you is all the difference.
Humans are relational creatures. At the core of who we are, being taken care of touches something deep inside us that we want and need. As it turns out, however, dogs might share something similar!
One puppy duo in Cairo, Egypt, showed us that humans aren’t the only ones who look out for their sick families.
In a viral story, we see just how far this puppy family was willing to go to care for each other. The story is about two german shepherd pups that are brother and sister. Both of them came down with a scary disease named the parvovirus.
The parvovirus is a life-threatening virus that usually attacks stray and shelter dogs.
Since most home animals have the parvo vaccination, it doesn’t usually affect them. For stray and shelter dogs it can be a deadly event if left untreated.
“Parvo is a direct virus that is caused by contaminated feces. It is caused by the canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) virus. CPV-2 is highly contagious and attacks the gastrointestinal tract as well as the immune system of puppies and dogs. Puppies at a young age are also at risk of the virus attacking their heart” – Advanced Animal Care
In the video, we get an answer to the question of “do dogs feel empathy”.
The brother and sister had both recently contracted the virus, but the brother had already made a full recovery. Unfortunately, his sister was still in the throws of the virus and was in serious condition. She looked pitiful and in need of some care.
Since the virus is so contagious, only a dog that already had the virus was even allowed near her.
Since her brother had recently been through the exact same ordeal, he was allowed to be near her. Instead of staying away from his sick and lethargic sister, however, we see something incredible.
Taking her head under his paw, he sits with her like a loving sibling would, caring for her!
A little bit of comfort goes a long way! Instead of leaving her to fend for herself, he simply sat as guardian while she got some much-needed rest. You can’t look at this incredible scene and even begin to make the claim that “dogs don’t feel emotion”! The best part? Reports say that she made a full recovery. Having someone to care for makes all the difference.
