Pregnant stray cat requests to be let inside woman’s home so she can give birth
Who knows how this could have gone if this woman wasn't there to help.

Animals are much smarter than we think. When they are in need, they know exactly how to communicate to humans. And most of the time, it is because of those communications that we are able to help.

Artist Ida Floreak had been living in New Orleans for over ten years (she is originally from Cambridge, Massachusetts). Ever since settling into her new home, she has met plenty of cool people and cats.

Usually, stray cats are pretty common, but a special cat began to hang and linger around the house for a while last fall.

At the time, Ida already had a cat of her own named Bruce, so she just figured the two were trying to start up a beautiful friendship. So she let them do just that and she even named the stray cat Salami.

“[My cat] is a 7-year-old Siamese, and about twice her size. He’s big and very rude but I love him. Salami does too — he’s the reason she started coming by. I would let him outside for a little while and they would hang out in the backyard together. When he would come back in, she started to follow him. Now they hang out all day, nap together, and groom each other. It’s very sweet,” Ida told Bored Panda.

The two cats continued to spend time together, so Ida tried to gently catch Salami so that she could take her in for a vet visit. She wanted to get her fixed and vaccinated.

But before Ida did that, she soon realized that Salami was actually pregnant.

“One day, Salami started meowing insistently at my door at 5 a.m. I had started feeding her at this point so she knew to come by, but she had never been so insistent and certainly never so early,” Ida said.

“Salami came inside and just meowed at me for a few hours so I figured something was about to happen; she was so round at that point,” the artist said.

Mothers — whether they are human or animals — would do absolutely anything to protect their child. So that’s what was happening. Salami knew she needed a space where her baby kitten could enter the world safely.

Ida let Salami in and then she had her babies around 8 or 9 a.m.

The artist did everything in her power to help, too. She provided Salami with blankets and made sure the environment was as safe and quiet as possible. Soon, she welcomed four kittens into the world.

“Salami lives with me now. I was able to get her fixed and vaccinated, and she and Bruce hang out all day together. She’s adjusted really well, and is a very sweet and loving little cat. All of the kittens have gone to friends: one is in Mississippi, and the other three are all in my neighborhood. I’m glad I get to still have a connection with them,” Ida explained.

This all happened toward the beginning of quarantine when everything seemed (somehow) even more scary and worrisome. She went on to explain that this whole incident actually ended up being a nice distraction.

Seeing the new kittens enter the world and helping the cat brought the artist a lot of hope that, at the time, was so desperately needed.

It’s pretty nuts to think about how a pregnant cat can just show up on your doorstep one day with no warning, but we are so glad she knocked on the right door and that Ida was very kind and helpful.

Who knows what would have happened if Ida wasn’t there to open the door at that moment. We are just super glad that she did and that this mother and all of her kittens are safe and healthy!
