Pregnant foster dog gives birth to huge litter of puppies
The number of puppies Kaya gave birth to is astounding.

A couple thought they’re just saving their pit bull’s life.

The sad reality about shelters is that sometimes, some shelters opt to put down rescued dogs. The number has since been reduced due to more robust campaigns for adoptions rather than shopping. It’s not enough to completely eradicate it, though.

Jesse and Tara met Kaya in such conditions.

She was about to be euthanized when the couple stepped up and offered to foster her. No one knew where she came from or if she was owned by someone else before. She just showed up on a farm one day and then was taken to the shelter.

Nobody wanted Kaya. Not even on the farm where she showed up. No one wanted to take her except Jesse and Tara.

She was in bad shape when they took Kaya in.

Her ribs were protruding against her skin. She was severely underweight but despite that, her spirits are up.

The couple gave Kaya the home she needed so she could recover. They gave her a loving environment and food that can help her gain back her healthy weight.

Suddenly, they noticed her tummy was “swelling.”

The sudden weight was strangely concentrated in and around her belly area. At one point, they thought they were overfeeding Kaya.

Worried and concerned, they brought Kaya to a veterinarian. That’s when they knew that their next few months will be a handful.

It turns out, Kaya was pregnant.

The couple was shocked by the news. They had no idea about Kaya’s pregnancy.

They didn’t expect that she’s carrying life within her, just as she was about to be put down. And we’re not just talking about a litter of 6 or so puppies.

The couple supported Kaya throughout the pregnancy.

Near the end of her term, Kaya got really heavy. She spends most of her time laying down or rolling on her back on the grass. Soon enough, Kaya began showing signs of nesting.

The couple braced themselves for labor, and if the news shocked them, they’re about to be even more surprised.

They eased Kaya through labor.

At first, they thought it’s going to take them the whole day with 7 or 8 puppies crawling in the litter. They even assumed that it’s just going to be a “day thing” and that they’ll be done in time for dinner.

Then puppy nine came out, followed by ten. And two and a half days later, Kaya has puppies climbing on top of each other just so they could nurse.

They thought puppy 15 would be the last.

All of a sudden, Kaya started panting heavily. Puppy 16 emerged from her mother, finally ending Kaya’s pregnancy.

Just when Jesse and Tara thought they saved one dog, they saved 17 lives – Kaya’s and the 16 puppies she gave birth to.

All of them were overjoyed at how things turned out.

The puppies were healthy and Kaya was tired to the bone giving birth to all of them. For at least a week, the couple took turns watching over the litter.

Kaya was hands-on, though. She loves running around and playing with the entire litter. The puppies just spill out from doors and their beds, and Kaya, Jesse, and Tara are all there to watch them grow.

Eventually, they had to be given out.

In the end, the couple adopted Kaya and one of her puppies named Sefina. The other puppies were given to loving forever homes – a chance they got only because a couple wanted to save one foster dog.

Watch how this pittie surprised her foster parents when they noticed her tummy growing.
