Bringing life into the world is a tall order.

Although we often refer to the “miracle of birth,” we don’t always stop to consider how difficult the actual process is. Mothers who are pregnant want to know as much as they can about their unborn children in advance, they want the best care available and the safest and most loving place possible to actually give birth. As it turns out, pregnant dogs seem to want all the exact same things.

That was the case for one very pregnant pooch named Storie.

Storie was a shelter dog who just about ready to go into labor.

Her belly was very distended when the Cuyahoga County Kennel in Ohio was visited by a couple who was looking to foster or adopt a dog. The couple were Chris and Mariesa and although they had bonded with Storie immediately, they were overwhelmed with the prospect of raising so many additional puppies:

“I’m trying to think, ‘Is this going to work? Is there any way we can make this work?’ And [Mariesa] in the meantime was just like, ‘Let’s save the dog, that’s why we’re here.’”

The pair did decide to adopt Storie and took her to the vet for a check-up.

At the vet’s office, they learned that Storie was pregnant with a whopping 12 puppies! Chris and Mariesa took Storie home and was prepared to get to know her before she gave birth, presumably a few days later. As it turned out, however, Storie had been ready to burst at the shelter and was seemingly only waiting for a safer environment to do so.

Within 18 hours of being home, Storie went into labor and gave birth to all 12 puppies.

As it turns out, Chris and Mariesa’s intervention came just in time—and the puppies are as adorable as one would expect.

Although the pair can’t keep all the puppies themselves (they already have seven without Storie), they are taking care of Storie and her pups in the meantime while working to get them placed in loving homes throughout the area. Still, the pair said that they might not be able to resist adopting at least a couple of the lovable little ones!

In all, Chris and Mariesa’s kindness saved Storie and helped her birth experience be a little more pleasant.

Although it can be difficult to decide what we can handle when it comes to helping others, Chris and Mariesa’s example is a great one that shows how much of a difference we can make. Despite having a full house of dogs already, they opened their doors to Sortie knowing how much pressure it would be.

Congratulations on all the puppies, Sortie!
