We all know cats can be territorial when they feel threatened. And if you threaten their food? They won’t like that at all. But what about possums? Some say they’re friendly and pretty calm creatures. Others say they’re scary, vicious, wild animals that are definitely not to be crossed.

The real question here is ‘What happens when you cross a cat and a possum’? And in that case— what happens when that possum tries to steal that cat’s food?

Being the same size, the answer can be unpredictable—but we’re lucky enough to have the unlikely interaction documented right here! In this hilarious series of photos, this adorable cat isn’t too sure how to feel about the situation and goes through a few stages.

First, the introduction. Surely the cat’s owner thought his feline was more than capable of defending itself because he seems totally fine with sitting back and documenting from indoors.

At first, the ballsy possum walks up and simply starts helping himself to the kitty’s meal. From here, it becomes obvious the cat’s not sure how to handle it.

Apparently, this cat isn’t very territorial. Surprisingly, he actually seems terrified of the imposter! Considering the cat’s dish is placed outside, you’d think he would run into other animals on occasion… But apparently, that’s not the case.

According to National Geographic, there are many different species of possums living in North America. In general, they are known as scavengers. “They often visit human homes or settlements to raid garbage cans, dumpsters, and other containers,” the website explains. Scarily enough, the tiny creatures are even known to hunt mice, birds, snakes and chickens! So, despite the fact that this possum is taking what clearly doesn’t’ belong to him, he does come by it naturally, after all.

If cats could talk, this cat would quietly be muttering “help me”.

Do the kitty’s natural animal instincts kick in? Does he unleash his inner lion and fend off the intruder for the food that is rightfully his? Most cats would start hissing and growling in this situation… But, looks like we have a scaredy cat on our hands!

Instead of defending his territory and food, the cat takes an unexpected turn. After some careful consideration (because food requires careful thought, of course), the kitty figures he’ll make the best of things. At this point, his owner is clearly enjoying the spectacle and just as curious as the rest of us.

With no help from his owner, and no way inside the house, what options does the poor kitty have? Looks like he’s going to have to share.

Just because the scaredy cat was in a sharing mood, doesn’t mean the possum was too! One defiant look from this tough-as-nails possum is all it takes to make the kitty back away.

National Geographic says possums will play dead when they feel threatened by other animals. Considering the glare this one is giving the cat, I’m going to guess he’s feeling pretty darn confident about the situation.

Looks like the possum won this battle, but I have a feeling there may be another battle on the horizon… But this time it’ll be with the cat’s owner!

I can already see him unleashing angry meows as if to say, “How could you leave me out there with that mean, hungry possum?!”

Did the possum rightfully win, or did the cat let him win? Hopefully this little ginger kitty got some extra treats and cuddles after the event— and we’re also hoping the mean, little possum made his way home for good!
