Attention cat lovers, we think we might just have your new favorite breed! These adorable cats in these photos are of the Selkirk Rex breed. Originating not too long ago in 1987, their distinctly thick hair gives them an adorable look and soft touch.
They were first spotted in Montana after a feral cat gave birth to five kittens and one of the kitten’s in the litter had noticeably thicker and curlier hair than its brothers and sisters. While its siblings had the normal straight coat of domestic cats, this kitten caught the attention of a breeder named Jeri Newman, who adopted her and named her Miss DePesto. When Miss DePesto gave birth to six kittens herself, three of her children had thick coats like hers, which proved that this trait was here to stay.
Jeri Newman decided to name the new breed the Selkirk, after her stepfather, and while the breed is unique enough on its own, the name is also unique for being the only breed named after a human!
For cat lovers, they’re known to the world as poodle cats, while others cheekily refer to these little animals as the “wolf in sheeps clothing.” They’re also known for being great for families, sociable, tolerable, and at times a little silly. They can be a little high maintenance as their coats need to be brushed a couple times a week to make sure their fur doesn’t get mangled. Brushing also helps avoid shedding as these cats do shed and the cats could hack up hairballs as well. Despite some of it’s more high maintenance qualities, they’re absolutely adorable and perfect for those looking to bring a cat into their home!
