The thought of your pet being trapped in a house fire while you’re away from home is any pet owner’s worst nightmare. So it’s great that modern-day technology is allowing us to keep an eye on what’s going on in our homes, even when we’re not there.
When a couple from Orlando, Florida first installed a Ring doorbell into their home, they probably had in mind that it was going to be an extra layer of security.
Ring doorbells are great as you get a motion alert every time somebody gets close to your door – but aside from warning you of any intruders, it turns out that this clever doorbell also has other uses.
Ring doorbells also pick up motion from inside the house, and when the camera detected the couple’s dog, Prada, barking in the kitchen, they immediately knew that something was wrong.
“We got the motion alert. When we saw the camera, she was barking in the kitchen. She never does that,” Owner Nestor Gonzalez told Click Orlando.
Nestor decided to keep an eye on things, and was quick to check his phone when another alert came through 30 minutes later. In that moment, it instantly became clear why Prada had been barking. Their kitchen had caught fire.
“Everything was smokey and it was cloudy inside so we couldn’t see anything,” Americo Ledezma said.
Nestor and Americo rushed home to find their kitchen completely engulfed in flames. Prada was home alone, and their thoughts instantly turned to whether she was okay.
“All we can think about was Prada, hoping she was okay. Material stuff, you can always replace. But her life, that’s something you can’t replace,” Gonzalez said.
Thankfully, firefighters from Orange County Fire Rescue were quick to arrive on the scene, and they carried Prada out to safety. Her fur was grey with soot and she was a little shaken up, but apart from that she was okay!
Firefighters praised the pup’s quick thinking, and they predicted that the fire would have been much worse if the family hadn’t have been alerted when they were.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and while the house had thousands of dollars worth of damage, the family just feel an incredible sense of relief that Prada is alive and well.
“Everything’s gone. All the hard work, everything we have done,” said Gonzalez. “We have to start all over again. It’s so frustrating seeing everything devastated like it is inside.”
“The good part is that it’s material. I’m glad that we are okay and that Prada is OK,” said Ledezma.
