How could someone do this to a dog?

One January day in Michigan, a man who was driving to work saw a dog lying on the side of the road. When he stopped to help the dog, he was shocked to see that the animal had a bullet hole in his head. The dog’s leg was also badly broken.

The man thought the poor pit bull was dead. But then, the dog picked up his head and looked at his rescuer.

The man called his wife, who stayed with the dog and comforted him until the police arrived. To the police’s surprise, the dog wagged its tail when he saw them.

The police brought the dog to a nearby animal hospital for treatment for his hypothermia. Once he was stabilized, the police brought the dog over to Northwoods Animal Shelter, where the staff made sure the dog was happy and comfortable. They named the pup Sarge.

“From the minute the police picked him up, he was kissing their faces, wagging his tail, even though he must have been in excruciating pain,” Sarah Erickson, the manager of Northwoods Animal Shelter, told MLive.

Sarge needed surgery on his broken leg, so Erickson drove the pup to the University of Wisconsin, which has a veterinary hospital that specializes in orthopedics.

Thankfully, the vets were able to save Sarge’s leg. His leg is now in a cast, and he should soon be able to walk on it. The veterinarians weren’t able to remove the bullet from Sarge’s spine, but the swelling has gone down, and Sarge is feeling better every day!

Sarge has settled into life at Northwoods Animal Shelter.

The one-year-old dog has tons of energy, and he loves Erickson and the rest of her staff. The shelter regularly shares updates about Sarge on their Facebook page.

Cone free for a few minutes tonight. Sarge is feeling great and is full of energy. We are working hard to keep him calm and quiet. We are using lots of puzzle toys and chewies to keep his mind occupied.

The police are still searching for the person who shot Sarge, but they did find promising evidence at the crime scene. Hopefully, the police will find this cruel person before they can hurt any more innocent animals.
