In June 2017, the California Highway Patrol received a very unique call: someone had spotted an orange kitten running across the Golden Gate Bridge.
The police officers quickly hurried over, wanting to help the kitten before it got hurt. They drove over the bridge, looking for the tiny orange kitten, but they didn’t see anything. They turned around at the end of the bridge and tried again.
On their second time across, they saw a little head pop up from inside one of the movable median barriers.
The police officers knew they had to act fast to catch the kitten, so they quickly closed one lane of traffic. Once their path was clear, the police officers hurried over to the kitten.
The officers grabbed the kitten and brought the frightened little animal into their car.
The police officers breathed a sigh of relief, happy that the kitten was okay. Then, they brought him to a local veterinarian’s office to get him checked out. They decided to name the little cat Bridges.
At the veterinarian’s office, Bridges got a much-needed bath and a check-up. The veterinarians said that despite everything he had been through, he was in good health. They also checked for a microchip, but he didn’t have one.
The officers put up a Facebook post describing the rescue. They also tried to locate Bridges’ owner:
“If you happened to lose your little cat in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge today, please give us a call or send us a message. We are very perplexed as to how he managed to get so far out in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge without being hit by another vehicle. Until then, this cute little guy, tentatively named Bridges, is on his way to a new home with people who will take great care of him.”
Nobody claimed the cat, and so one of the policemen, Officer Smith, decided to foster Bridges. He took him home and nursed the kitty back to health. Officer Smith and his family weren’t able to keep the kitty permanently, but they wanted to make sure he got into good hands. So, they brought him to Marin Humane Society:
“As much as the Smiths wanted to hold onto Bridges, they decided that the best thing for him would be to find him a forever family that could provide him with lots of attention and care. We have received so many adoption requests on our Facebook page, but the reality is we are not experts on placing animals in homes. A call to Marin Humane was made and the staff there enthusiastically agreed to take him. We were already very grateful to them after they reached out to us and offered to neuter and microchip Bridges for free.”
Marin Humane Society received tons of applications for little Bridges. After going through all of them, they found the perfect new forever home for the kitten. Bridges’ new owner came to take him home, and Marine Humane Society took a photo of the two of them. In the photo, it’s clear how much Bridges’ new mom loves him!
California Highway Patrol still isn’t sure how Bridges ended up on the Golden State Bridge, but thankfully, he’s now in good hands. This cute kitty has a great future ahead of him!
