While first responders are usually called when humans need help, they often have to do things that weren’t on the normal schedule for that day! For a few police officers in North Reading, Massachusetts, their line of duty would lead them to help a puppy who needed a hero.
Caught on video, police officers jump to the rescue of a choking puppy.
Megan Vitale ran into a police station looking for help, obviously distraught. While most people look to the police for their own safety, Megan had a friend who needed help. Running in and knocking on the window, Megan signaled that she needed someone to come and assist her. You can tell from her movements that something was very wrong.
Soon, Megan’s friend runs over and it all makes sense.
Megan then brings her friend over and it all comes together. Her friend comes in carrying a little puppy in his arms. It wasn’t the humans who needed help, it was her puppy. Kneeling down with the puppy in his arms, you can see that the dog isn’t ok.
Bodhi had swallowed something and was choking.
We have all seen dogs jump to eat something and practically inhale it. This is what seems to have happened with Megan’s 9-week-old Saint Bernard puppy. After he had eaten the piece of food too quickly, he began to choke when it got stuck in his throat.
Once the police realized what was happening, they jumped to action.
Running out of the office, they got to work helping the little dog. At this time, Bodhi was completely limp and unresponsive. It was now or never if they hoped to save the little dog.
In a fearful moment, everyone sits and waits as they try to revive the little dog.
These moments where a loved one’s life is on the line are terrifying. You don’t know the outcome and tensions are high. One of the officers was sitting and pounding on the limp puppy’s back, hoping to dislodge the food that was still stuck in the dog’s throat. Everyone else just had to sit by, hoping that it worked.
After a few hard pounds on the puppy’s back, the food eventually dislodged!
Once the food came out, they revived the weak dog and gave him some much-needed oxygen. The officers held the little dog while he recovered. It seems that first responders are able to treat animals too!
Bodhi was treated by a vet and the officers were praised for the help.
After the immediate treatment was administered by some firefighters, Bodhi was taken to the vet to make sure everything else was working in his little body. The video of the police helping was later released, letting everyone know how helpful they were and the role they played.
Megan is one happy dog-mom.
Scary situations like that are nervewracking to be a part of but Megan is sure thankful for the quick-acting police and the help they gave. Later reports also show that Bodhi fully recovered and was happy and healthy as ever.
