One evening in 2016, the Lakeland Police Department in Florida received a call about an abandoned kitten found on the side of the road.

The officer on duty, Mike Cardin, rushed over to the area and saw the kitten standing under a street lamp, shivering in fear. Officer Cardin carefully picked the kitten up and brought her over to the police station.

At the station, he put her in a cardboard box and gave her a blanket. He planned to call animal welfare later in his shift, but then something unexpected happened.

Another police officer, Sergeant Brian Wallace, walked into the station to start his shift. And when he saw the kitten, his heart completely melted.

“I got to the station just after Cardin had secured her and went to check on her,” Wallace told The Dodo. “Here she was, alone and frightened. Since this was not too long after the beginning of the shift, I just couldn’t leave her in that box for about 10 more hours, just to have animal control take her away.”

The kitten slept on his lap while he worked at his desk. The kitten loved spending time with Wallace, and the two quickly bonded.

A few hours into his shift, Wallace had to go on patrol. He didn’t want to leave the kitten alone, though, so he decided to take her with him. He brought her cardboard box and placed it on the passenger seat of his car.

“I took the box she was originally put in and placed it in the passenger seat of my patrol vehicle, facing me,” Wallace said. “That’s where she stayed for the rest of the night … and didn’t seem to mind, I might add.”

After all the excitement, the kitten ended up falling asleep while she was on patrol. But since she looked so cute, Wallace didn’t mind that his partner was sleeping on the job!

By the time Wallace’s shift ended, he knew he was adopting the kitten. He had fallen in love, and he didn’t want the kitten to go into a shelter.

“That little face … I was done,” Wallace said.

Wallace took the kitten home that day and gave her a name, Kelsey. The kitten quickly settled into life with her new dad. She was very sweet, and she loved cuddling with Wallace.

“She’s quite affectionate,” Wallace said. “It’s almost like she realizes she was given a decent chance at surviving after being feet away from heavy traffic and on her own at so young.”

Two years after being rescued, Kelsey has grown into a happy adult cat. She still enjoys cuddling with Wallace more than anything else, and her dad loves spoiling her with treats!
