The warm weather sure is nice, but it can make getting up and going to work a real chore. Who wouldn’t rather stay at home and play outside all day instead of working? One dog was supposed to be on the job, but he just wasn’t in the mood for it.
Jango Fett is a K-9 officer with the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office.
He is normally happy to show up and get the work done. He’s very dedicated to finding narcotics and helping police crackdown on the drug crimes in Maryland. On this day, he just couldn’t get going. We’ve all been there, right?
Jango is a Belgian Malinois. He has a lot of energy and drive, plus a nose that can find anything.
He has been trained by officer Ryan Costin and is his loyal partner. He will hunt down the bad guys and protect Costin at all cost. He usually beats Costin to the car, but not on warm days, when there’s much more fun to be had outside.
According to the AKC:
“Belgian Malinois are squarely built, proud, and alert herders standing 22 to 26 inches. Strong and well-muscled, but more elegant than bulky, there’s an honest, no-frills look about them, as befit dogs built to work hard for their feed. A breed hallmark is the proud carriage of the head. Coat colors range from a rich fawn to mahogany. The black ears and mask accentuate bright, questioning eyes the color of dark Belgian chocolate.”
Costin tried to get the dog to hop into his car, but Jango just wants to roll around in the cool grass.
No matter what Costin does, the dog refuses to get in the car. The dog just looks at him as if to say:
”Nah, man, just call in sick. C’mon, let’s play hooky for once!”
Costin’s wife, Cassie, is videotaping the entire ordeal from the window of their home and getting a pretty good laugh from it. She also narrates it, which makes it even funnier. Costin just can’t seem to get the dog to go to work.
Finally, he decides to make a deal with Jango.
If Jango gets in the car, Costin will give him a belly rub. It seems to work. As soon as Jango gets his belly rubbed, he jumps right in the car like nothing was ever wrong. Cassie says from the window:
“So, all I need to get ready for work is a belly rub. Got it, check.”
Costin might have ended up at work late that day, but if anyone asks, it’s all Jango’s fault. At least his wife has the video to prove it. Once the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office found out about what happened, the staff decided they had to share it with everyone else. They posted it on their Facebook page and said:
“A beautiful Spring day makes the best Deputies want to play hooky!! Yes, we all love working at the Sheriff’s Office, but just like our human Deputies, when spring fever hits even our awesome K-9s just want to go to the park and lie in the cool grass and maybe play a little catch…. or um fetch!!”
Officer Costin better started getting up early if Jango is going to take this long to get into the car.
Now that Costin knows he just has to give Jango a belly rub, he might be able to make the process a little easier. Hopefully, Jango got to enjoy this weekend off and was ready to go to work when Monday rolled around.
Jango might be given his handler a tough time now, but Costin knows that Jango will perk up with it comes time to really get to work.
Even on the hottest and prettiest days, Jango is still a K-9 officer, and his job is always a priority. There’s plenty of time to play in the yard after the workday.
