Lucy the pit bull absolutely loves her human brother. So much so that she gets super excited when the little boy comes home from school.
But the two weren’t close from the start.
The 5-year-old boy is non-verbal and on the autism spectrum. He was diagnosed just a few months after Miranda Peterson brought Lucy into her family.
“He did NOT like her for the first year of her life. I think it was too much of a change for him, and he didn’t like her being in his personal space,” Peterson told The Dodo.
But Lucy, being the good dog that she is, decided to give the boy some space and gave him time to let their bond grow.
“A few months ago, my husband started to take our son on a daily walk after he finished his workday,” Peterson said. “My son LOVES being outdoors so he thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Lucy would tag along for these walks where she and the little boy would play fetch.
Now the boy loves to engage with Lucy. They play fetch together and he loves to fill Lucy’s bowl with food every day. And sometimes he’ll even give Lucy some pets.
Lucy absolutely loves her brother and being outside with him.
She gets super excited when he comes home from school and gets off the bus.
She can hear the bus as soon as it turns into the neighborhood. That’s when she alerts Peterson and does a little happy dance until Peterson opens the door and lets her outside.
“One day she ran inside the bus to follow her brother, and that’s when she officially met the bus driver,” Peterson said. “Then every day he would come down a few steps from the bus for Lucy to go greet him.”
Lucy greets her brother and then patiently waits for him to step off the bus before going to say hi to the bus driver.
It’s like Lucy’s saying thank you for bringing my brother home safely to me.
The bus driver loves pit bulls, so he was very pleased to meet Lucy. It’s one of the best parts of the day for both of them.
Lucy waits for that moment pretty much all day.
Well, twice a day.
She gets to say hi when the bus picks her brother up and when it drops him off.
“She is like a little alarm clock and lets me know when the bus is outside,” Peterson said. “She immediately starts whining and waits by the door. I always ask her to wait (because manners) until the bus driver helps my son get off, and as soon as I say, ‘OK,’ she runs to him for a quick pet then runs back to me as if she’s telling me, ‘Mom! He’s here! It’s really him!’ Then she goes back for longer pets.”
A video of Lucy’s daily bus routine ended up going viral on TikTok.
“She usually goes back for another round,” Peterson told fans on TikTok. “It’s like she has to tell me that the bus driver likes her and then goes back to him.”
