When animal rescue organization No Kill Kern received a call about a German Shepherd living in a field, they knew they had to rescue her. The Bakersfield-based organization headed out to the field, and they brought their trusty pit bull Lucy along to help them out. Lucy is a vital part of No Kill Kern’s rescue team, and she’s also their official mascot!
Lucy quickly spotted the German Shepherd in the field, and she led the rescuers towards the other dog.
The rescuers tried to approach the German Shepherd, but she ran away. The poor dog had clearly not experienced much kindness in her life, and she was afraid of the rescuers.
The rescuers decided to set up a “trap” to catch the dog.
The rescuers placed a cage in the middle of the field, and they put food in it to attract the dog. Then, they left the area. When they came back, they were happy to see that the German Shepherd was in the cage. The rescuers gently lifted up the cage and let the dog out. They put her on a leash and took her to their shelter.
No Kill Kern named the dog Queen, and they gave her toys to help her feel comfortable in her new home. Queen was nervous at first, but soon, she started to relax.
Queen is staying with me while her foster is out of town and we are taking advantage of the time to work on some basic training. While she is an amazing dog, there are still times where she becomes overly excited, and others when she is timid and lacks the confidence of a well balanced dog.
Spending time around balanced, happy-go-lucky dogs is just one way to help a slightly insecure, but friendly dog, come out of their shell. Being a part of a pack helps Queen to balance out her energy, as she tries to match the energy of dogs around her. As you can see, she’s been getting all her wiggles out and having a blast.
Queen is looking for a home, and although she does have some hip issues, she will still have lots of loving and happy years ahead. Apply now www.nokillkern.org

Lucy also helped Queen get more comfortable at No Kill Kern. Sweet Lucy loves other dogs, and she’s every new foster dog’s first best friend.
Lucy also teaches nervous or aggressive dogs how to be social. She’s patient with the dogs, and she always wins them over with her sweet personality!
Lucy has helped many dogs learn the skills they need to succeed in their new forever home, including Queen. Once Queen was more comfortable around people, No Kill Kern decided to transfer her to Marley’s Mutt Dog Rescue to participate in their unique Pawsitive Change program. There, she was renamed Reina.
After completing Marley’s Mutt Dog Rescue’s Pawsitive Change program, the organization put her up for adoption. In January of 2017, Queen/Reina was adopted and moved into her new forever home.
Lucy and No Kill Kern’s rescue team did an amazing job rescuing Queen/Reina and teaching her how to trust people again. To learn more about the sweet German Shepherd’s rescue, check out the video below.
