People usually teach their kids to go to the police for help, but how many people teach their dogs to do the same? Apparently, there are pet parents out there who do because when two pit bulls were in trouble, they ran straight to the police.
Officers with the Saxony-Anhalt Police Department in Germany are usually in charge of a small section of the Autobahn.
Cars can go as fast as they want, but there are not as many accidents as you might think. When there are accidents, the police department must respond.
When the officers received reports of a lot of debris in the road, they had to remove it so there were no wrecks or problems. They responded to the site to find that traffic was creeping along. When they attempted to remove the debris, the traffic came to a standstill to allow them to do so safely.
With the road safe to cross, two Staffordshire terrier crossbreeds darted down from an embankment and straight into one of the officer’s cars. Everyone was surprised to see them running through traffic, and even more surprised to see them jump in the open door.
The dogs were friendly and determined.
It was clear that they needed some kind of help and knew just where to go to find it. The dogs were actually lost and couldn’t find their way back home. The police officers were impressed.
They took a few photos of the dogs and then took them to a local shelter. The shelter was able to reunite them with their owner. The owner was surprised and even a bit embarrassed to hear about the way her dogs made themselves at home in the police car, but also thankful to have them back.
She clearly spends a lot of time with the dogs to make them trust people so easily.
Several different breeds of dogs are referred to as pit bulls, including the Staffordshire terrier. Many people fear pit bull-type dogs, but these dogs proved that these breeds can be friendly and happy. Most of the time, pit bulls just get a bad rap and aren’t as bad as they are often portrayed.
According to Defend Pit Bulls:
“The Pit Bull breed makes up 5-9.6% of the United States dog population. In 2007, there were above 72 million dogs in the United States provided by American Veterinary Medical Association. That’s between 3,600,000 and 6,912,000 Pit Bull breed dogs in the United States.”
The group also claims that the amount of pit bulls vs. the amount of pit bull attacks proves that they are not nearly as dangerous as other breeds.
In fact, some of the most dangerous dogs are actually small breeds. Even police dogs like German shepherds have a higher percentage of attacks than pit bulls.
These dogs sure don’t seem a bit guilty and don’t look dangerous at all. Since they are so comfortable in police cars, maybe they could become unofficial police dogs. Their owner must be proud that they knew to go to the police for help.
They also knew to wait until the traffic stopped instead of darting out in front of the vehicles as they flew by. A lot of dogs aren’t so smart and end up getting hit by cars on the road.
Hopefully, they never escape from home and get lost again.
If they do, at least their owner will know where to find them. Now that they have made friends with the police, they should be easier to find. As long as they stay away from the dangerous Autobahn, they might be OK. Let’s hope they don’t have any more run-ins with the police or the busy road.
