In May 2019, a one-year-old stray pit bull named Jukebox was found wandering around the streets of Tucson. Rescuers brought the sweet pup to the Pima Animal Care Center’s shelter. Then, about a month later, another two-year-old pit bull named Agatha was surrendered to the shelter.

Agatha and Jukebox met in a playgroup, and from the first moment they saw each other, they were inseparable!

The shelter staff members were amazed by how quickly these two pit bulls bonded.

“Typically when a bonded pair of dogs come in the shelter, they’ve spent their whole life together,” Kristen Hassen-Auerbach, director of animal services, told The Dodo. “But with these two, they didn’t know each other. They met in a playgroup one day and from the second they laid eyes on each other they became inseparable.”

Jukebox and Agatha began spending all their time together. They’d even cuddle up together in the same kennel at night.

“There’s plenty of space for them to stretch out,” Nikki Reck, the shelter’s public information officer, said. “But they share that tiny little bed together and that’s how they prefer it.”

When the shelter staff saw how inseparable these two dogs were, they knew they needed to adopt them out together.

“Typically we don’t say ‘these two have to be adopted together’ because that makes it take longer for them to find a home,” Reck said. “But with these two, we just can’t bring ourselves to split them up, so we’re hoping against hope that we can find a home for them together because the two of them are meant to be.”

One day, a shelter staff member took a photo of Jukebox and Agatha cuddling. The staff member shared the photo on the shelter’s Facebook page. It quickly went viral, receiving thousands of likes and shares. Everyone was touched by these pit bulls’ devotion to each other!

The shelter staff also hoped this photo would help Jukebox and Agatha find a forever home together, and it ended up doing the trick! Just a couple weeks after this photo was shared, Jukebox and Agatha were adopted.

The shelter staff was so happy that Jukebox and Agatha would be spending their lives together! They shared a video of the two pit bulls getting settled into their new home—from the video, it’s clear that their new parents love them.

Pima Animal Care Center takes in over 17,000 animals per year, and they currently have more than 400 dogs. The shelter hopes that this story will help encourage more people to adopt animals like Jukebox and Agatha.
