Shane Shafer’s mom only left him home for a short while to go pick up her other kids.

She had no idea that he would be in any danger in her absence.

But thankfully the family’s pit bull, who is named Baby Girl, was there to protect the fourth grader. It was about 5 p.m in the evening when Shane was left alone in his Lincoln, Nebraska home.

“I was upstairs when it happened,” 9-year-old Shane told 1011 NOW.

That’s when he heard someone at the front door.

“I thought it was my mom because I heard someone trying to open the door and I thought it was her trying to unlock the door with her keys,” he said.

But it wasn’t the boy’s mother, it was an intruder wearing a ski mask.

Poor little Shane was absolutely terrified.

“It seemed like he wanted me cause when he saw me he just slowly walked toward me and he didn’t look at anything else he just kept his eyes on me,” said Shane.

The man started to chase after Shane and the boy fled for his life.

“The dude started chasing me upstairs and I called my dog down and they started to fight,” said Shane.

Baby Girl sprung into action and defended the boy’s life. She ended up chasing the intruder out of the home.

“It was in a blink of an eye and I was really scared. Because it was only me home and I didn’t know who it was and the only protection I had was my dogs,” said Shane.

The family has a second pit bull but it was Baby Girl that came to protect him.

As soon as the assailant fled in a silver car, Shane ran to a neighbor’s house to call the police. Neighbors said that they live in a neighborhood where people look out for one another.

Shane’s mom got a phone call a short while later from a neighbor about the attempted robbery.

She told reporters that she was beyond thankful that her son was OK.

Especially because it didn’t seem like a normal burglary. It seemed as if the intruder was after the boy. Shane said he rewarded Baby Girl with a sucker once his parents got home and says that won’t be home alone any time soon.
