Rescue dogs’ stories are often heartbreaking.

But that doesn’t mean that animal lovers become immune to hearing about them. Recently, the internet has turned its focus on Gracie, a pit bull that has recently gone to a foster home.

In September, a witness saw a driver push a black pit bull from a car.

That dog was Gracie. She looked confused and tried to make her way back to the vehicle. But her owner kicked her out of the way and sped off, leaving her alone, heartbroken, and at a loss for what had just happened.

That witness couldn’t bear to see the dog abandoned, so they took her off the side of the road and drove to the nearest animal shelter. That was Elmbrook Humane Society in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

At the shelter, they assessed the dog and found out she was around 2 years old. Despite her age, she weighed a meager 18 pounds.

That’s so skinny you could see her bones. Not only was she incredibly small, but her skin was also in bad shape. The veterinarians at Elmbrook believe this is due to her poor nutrition.

However, Gracie is a fighter.

After a month of care, she has already gained 4 pounds, which is a significant amount of weight for a dog of her size. She is now off to a foster home, where she is getting the tender loving care she deserves.

The internet has taken a liking to Gracie, as her warm personality is evident by her sweet eyes and appearance. It’s clear that she just wants to live with a loving family who will take great care of her.

This has prompted people to send her knitted items to help keep her warm since her fur isn’t all the way back to normal yet.

But the sweaters aren’t enough. Unfortunately, Gracie has needed a lot of health care, and those costs add up quickly. Her foster parents are asking for donations so they can continue to help care for her and make sure she finds the perfect family to live out the rest of her days with. People have already been generous with donations, providing Gracie with the foundation she needs to thrive.

Once Gracie comes out of foster care, she is going to need a loving and compassionate family to live with long term.

With all the attention she has garnered over the internet, that’s likely not going to be a huge problem. People already love her and want her to get back to the happy and healthy dog she should be. Let’s just hope that her next owners will treat her the way she deserves: like a princess.

Animal activists everywhere are hoping that Gracie’s story will raise awareness about what you should and shouldn’t do if you can no longer take care of your pet. The workers at the Elmbrook Humane Society say they don’t judge people who bring their dogs in because everybody has different reasons for no longer being able to take care of their animals. But simply dumping your pet on the side of the road is unacceptable.

Now that Gracie is recovering nicely, she is expected to find a forever home soon enough. There, she will hopefully get the loving and caring family she truly deserves. She’s searching for a home where no other pets live and where there are no children under the age of 12.
