It’s nearly impossible to break the strong bond between two best friends, and even animals have proven that to be true. You can’t deny that there are plenty of animals that are good at forming bonds with others regardless of whether they are in the wild or not.

This pit bull from a shelter bonded with a small Chihuahua, and they became inseparable.

Merrill was a three-year-old pittie taken to the Rocket Dog Rescue in San Francisco along with an eight-year-old Chihuahua named Taco. Even though the staff knew nothing about their previous owners, the dogs’ closeness was enough to let them know that Merrill and Taco were best friends.

One day, a man fell in love with Merrill and decided to adopt her.

A man went inside the doors of Rocket Dog Rescue and looked around. Instantly, Merrill the pittie caught his attention. The man knew that Merrill was the dog he should adopt. All was well when he began the application process for Merrill. However, when the time came for Merrill’s potential owner to pick her up from the shelter, they ran into a problem.

It seems Merrill could not leave Taco alone at the shelter.

Rocket Dog Rescue noticed that Merrill could not bear to leave her best friend behind at the shelter when she was about to be picked up. One would cry whenever they would try to separate them from each other.

The staff carefully explained the situation to Merrill’s new owner, and eventually, he understood how strong their bond was. As he couldn’t adopt two dogs, the man was disheartened to know that he could not adopt Merrill, since it would be cruel to force Merrill to leave her best friend behind. Fortunately, the man was able to find another dog to bring home.

Finally, the shelter found someone willing to adopt both Merill and Taco.

The shelter changed their tactics and a volunteer named Jody offered to foster both dogs for a while until they could find them a new home. A family from San Jose became the answer to their prayers. The family stumbled upon them on Rocket Dog’s website and fell in love with Merrill and Taco’s story. The family met up with Jody and took the dogs to their new home.

The pups had almost reached their happy ending, but the story was not over yet.

With Taco’s age and previous medical issues, the family found out that the poor dog was suffering from asthma and dental disease. They later found out at the vet that Taco had an enlarged heart and his lungs were filled with fluid, which posed a bigger threat to the small dog’s life.

With the family’s efforts, they were able to provide Taco with medications, and the family showered affection on the little dog, which helped with his recovery. Now, Taco can enjoy life outside with Merrill even though he still needs to take his daily medications for his respiratory problems.

Amazingly, their closeness goes way back from before they were taken to the shelter, and their bond is still unyielding. Thankfully, both great dogs are now in the hands of a loving and caring family. Surely, this is the ending that everyone would hope for.
