Jasper the pit bull has done great work keeping the small town of Kennard, Indiana safe.
The 2½-year-old pit bull works as a drug-sniffing K-9. With his human partner Deputy Chief Don Crabtree, Jasper helps patrols the streets of Kennard.
Jasper’s story was almost very different. The pup was picked up as a stray and brought to a high-kill shelter in Virginia, where he was in danger of being euthanized.
“Pit bulls are normally the first to be euthanized,” Deputy Chief Crabtree told WTTV. “There’s too many of them in the shelters and everybody goes and kind of by-passes them.”
Thankfully, Jasper was noticed by animal rescue group The Throw Away Dog Project before the worst could happen.
Founded in 2014, this group goes to animal shelters and looks for pups that would make good police dogs. The rescue group then donates the dogs to small, rural police stations who wouldn’t be able to afford a K-9 on their own.
When The Throw Away Dog Project saw Jasper, they knew he would be perfect for their rescue group.
The Throw Away Dog Project took Jasper to their headquarters and began training him as a drug-sniffing dog. Jasper was a quick learner, and soon, he was ready to start working!
The organization looked through all their applications, and they decided Jasper would be the perfect fit for Deputy Chief Crabtree. Crabtree is the only paid police officer in Kennard, which has a population of 500 people. In recent years, the town has suffered from a devastating drug problem. Crabtree desperately needed help keeping the residents of Kennard safe.
Jasper headed to Kennard, Indiana, where he met Crabtree for the first time. The two instantly clicked—it was immediately clear that they were going to be great partners!
Crabtree is grateful to The Throw Away Dog Project for donating Jasper.
“You’re looking at the range of $10,000 to $15,000, it could even be higher, depends on where the dog comes from,” Crabtree said. “If it wasn’t for them, I really don’t think we would have him.”
Crabtree has started a GoFundMe page to help pay for Jasper’s food and training equipment. He’s also donating a portion of the proceeds to The Throw Away Project to thank them for giving him Jasper.
“Luckily someone saw something in Jasper,” Crabtree said.
Jasper is a talented, smart K-9 who has found a wonderful place to call home and a great partner! We’re so glad that The Throw Away Project saved Jasper and helped him find his calling.
