When it comes to the Pit bull, this breed has received a lot of bad rap. In most cases where an animal or human is attacked, it falls back on the owner and the way they raised their pup. In other words, if this particular kind of dog is treated badly, there’s a good chance it’s going to grow up to be aggressive.

Sweet and loving

The opposite is usually true for Pit bulls. When raised by a responsible person, someone who shows love and care, this breed is loyal to a fault. They’re great around other animals and adore children. But because this type of dog has the ability to be aggressive, it’s critical for the right people to adopt them.

An unfortunate story

Recently there was a news story about a four-year-old girl from the Bronx. On a Wednesday morning, she was viciously attacked by a Pit bull. Had it not been for a neighbor intervening, this child could’ve died rather than suffer serious injuries.

How it unfolded

According to police reports, this girl was in front of her house at 8:00 a.m. waiting for the school bus, just as she had done so many other times. But during the same period, two dogs in a fenced-in area nearby had escaped.

Her family witnessed the attack

This child wasn’t alone considering her age. She was there with family when all of a sudden, the dogs raced toward her. That’s when one of them, a Pit bull, lunged at her face and bit her. It was a horrible sight.

The dogs were spotted

One good thing that happened that day was that a neighbor by the name of Bobby Mahoney had spotted the dogs roaming around the area while he was helping his daughters prepare for school. Noticing they appeared aggressive, he closed his door and called 911.

Saved by a neighbor

Shortly after Mahoney had taken steps to protect his kids, the girl and her family started to walk down the street, right in the direction of the dogs. Then, the dog attacked. This neighbor stated, “I came outside with the bat and had to beat the dog to get it off of the little girl.”

He had to do something

Mahoney said he saw another neighbor using a pocketbook to try to scare the dogs away. But that was no match. So, he grabbed a bat and headed toward the little girl. He also stated that he had to hit the Pit bull at least 15 to 20 times before it would release the child.

Medical emergency

Once the dog let go, he could see that this four-year-old child was in really bad shape. Not only had the Pit bull bit her on the face but also on her neck. Quickly, emergency personnel arrived and rushed the child to Jacobi Hospital.

She survived

If Mahoney hadn’t taken the actions he did, calling 911 and beating the dog off the girl, things probably wouldn’t have turned out the way they did. Although emotionally traumatized, this child survived the attack.

Searching for the dogs

Animal control was finally able to round both of the dogs up, each one weighing roughly 50 pounds. One neighbor was so worried about these dogs before all this happened that he had secured the fence around his property.

As for the pup’s fate, they were both taken to the ASPCA. Since these dogs pushed through a strong fence, the owner won’t be charged with any crime. As stated, most Pit bull dogs are good but this just goes to show that without proper care, they can become aggressive.

If you believe there are potentially dangerous dogs in your neighborhood, never hesitate to notify authorities.
