There is a famous stigma that many of us have direct experience with. It’s usually called the “dad who doesn’t want a dog but ends up becoming best friends” effect, but we can shorten it to DWDWADBEUBBF. Catchy, right? It looks like a grump dad saying he doesn’t want a dog and then inevitably, he’s the one who walks the dog, naps with the dog, and becomes best friends.
It’s a hilarious sight and we’ve all seen it. As we are about to see, this doesn’t just happen with dads and dogs, it happens with lots of people who “don’t want a pet”!
1. Cat hater
This dad used to “hate cats”. From the looks of things, he doesn’t hold that belief anymore. It’s ok, dad, we all mature.
2. No animals in the house!
After a long and hard battle of saying no animals in the house, this dad is still sleeping on the floor. The cat really does rule this house.
3. Too cool
This dad didn’t want to get a dog but you know what they say! Either we start looking like our dogs or they start looking like us. This is a tough case to call!
4. No dogs in the bed
“No dogs in the bed!”, said dad. Dogs were, inevitably, still in the bed.
5. “I don’t want that cat”
This guy really didn’t want a cat and was adamant about it. Nevertheless, he now carries it to bed every night.
6. Claimed his territory
After saying he didn’t like cats, he has not changed his views. Now, he actually claims this one as his own even though it’s his daughters!
7. Definitley not
Fewer words are said in vain than, “we can’t keep it”. Guess what? They kept it.
8. Caught hugging
You can try to hide it but inevitably you cave. The hug is the ultimate form of submission to your pet and they know it.
9. 4 days later…
This was a mere four days after this man claimed he didn’t want a dog. What a hypocrite.
10. The progression of names
This is a hilarious story:
“That brown dog” who became “brown dog,” and then “Mr. Brown,” moved in with us. This is them 6 months later.
11. Not a hairless cat kinda guy
Don’t want to fall in love with a hairless cat? Too bad. All they really want is snuggles and love and you WILL give it.
12. “I’ll step on him…”
Dad was worried he would always be stepping on him. I guess they found a solution.
13. The little things
You can tell if a dad loves a dog from the little things they do. This dad always hangs both their raincoats after a walk and it’s clear he has a soft spot!
14. I’m not looking after it
From not wanting turtle to showing him photos of his brother.
Dad: “If we get a turtle, I’m not looking after it.” Also dad: “Ok Hector, let me show you pictures of your brothers.”
15. We DO NOT want a dog
He justifies it by saying he didn’t get a dog, he just adopted a new Minnesota fan. It checks out.
16. Refused to even touch him
This mom refused to even touch the dog for the first few months. Now, she feeds him sweet potatoes while he sits with her while she cooks!
17. NO dogs
The more you reject a dog, the harder you eventually become their friend. It’s a fact that science has proven.
18. Aren’t they dangerous?
This guy was adamant that pitties were too dangerous. How do those words land now, buddy?
19. NO way we are getting one
That NO WAY soon turns into a “sorta way” and then snuggles on the couch. It is inevitable.
20. No iPads OR dogs
From the looks of this photo, this pop is 0 and 2. I don’t think he’s all that mad about it, however.
21. Unspoken
This dad would never admit how much he loved his old dog. After seeing this photo, he doesn’t have to.
22. Awww, can’t she sleep with us?
This conversation says it all:
Husband (one year ago): “We aren’t getting a dog.” Husband (2 days after we acquired this little squirt): “Awww, she keeps crying, can’t she just sleep with us?”
23. The dad who didn’t want a dog
This is simply the case. You can’t stop a dog who wants to love you.
24. 7 months later
From “we’re not getting a dog” to drawing portraits? We have to say that’s quite an improvement, dad.
25. Anywhere and everywhere
This dad can NEVER say that he doesn’t want a dog after all this incriminating footage. I mean, it’s undeniable he’s in love.
26. Changed the rules
After making the rule that dogs aren’t allowed on the couch, he promptly changed it. We don’t blame him.
27. Nap buddies
The quick way to a dad’s heart seems to be becoming their nap buddy. This dog has cracked the code.
28. Two peas in a pod
Don’t want a dog turns into napping. Napping turns into the dog taking most of the couch. That turns into a loving relationship that “nobody” expected.
29. That smug face
This dog is fully aware that it stole this man’s heart. Dogs have a way of doing that, don’t they?
30. I want NOTHING to do with him
Ya, that may be true, DAD, but have you considered the fact that the dog want’s EVERYTHING to do with you? Who you think’s gonna win that?
31. Just stop believing dads
We can’t believe dads. This guy lied TWICE:
He Said “I Don’t Want A Dog.” Then He Said “I Don’t Want A Second Dog.” Yeah Dad, Ok
32. Sneaky boy
This dog did more than sneak into his sweater – he also snuck into his heart! It’s safe to say this dad has fully excepted this dog as his own.
33. “Hates dogs”
Oh, you hate dogs? Why are the grandpups always sitting in your lap, then? Caught.
34. Never know until you try
This is why you just DO IT and bring a pet home:
“My Dad has always been adamant about not having pets. I brought this little guy home expecting a shit storm”
35. A damn ankle-biter!
This is the “it’s not my dog” strategy. Dads try to relinquish all responsibility and ownership although it never works out well for them.
36. Bffs for life
This guy didn’t want a dog in the house and now he can’t go anywhere in the house without a dog. Like how the dog turned the tables like that?
37. Caught in 4k
This dad is on record saying he doesn’t consider himself a dog person. This photo is picture evidence that he is, in fact, a dog person.
38. Puppy love
Puppy love involving a puppy isn’t something that is described well as puppy love. Puppy love usually means something that won’t last, but one look at this puppy love is all it takes to break that notion.
39. Double trouble
If he’s not a dog person in his words, he’s a DOUBLE dog person in his actions. Does that make him a double liar? We think so.
40. Like a baby
This dad didn’t want a dog and now he only treats him like his own baby. Belly rubs and sleepy time snuggles are just part of the deal!
41. Floor buddies
This dad said he “didn’t like the dog”. In fact, he hates the dog so much that he now gets on the floor and cuddles with him just to remind himself how much he doesn’t love the dog.
42. They needed each other
This is sad but heartwarming:
After having to put down our dog of 14 years, my dad was hesitant about getting a puppy. i think they needed each other”
43. No small dogs
Some people say they don’t like small dogs. This dad said that he didn’t even want a small dog in his home.
Anyways, here is them after a bath.
44. The pretender
This dad likes to pretend he doesn’t like the dogs “because they smell”. Then his wife sends these photos to the kids.
45. Morning paper
This dad’s reasons for not wanting a dog included them being “messy” and “destructive”. This is them now.
46. 3 years is all it took
Having a dog die is really hard. Some people say they will never get another dog. This guy was one of those people but things changed, as they do.
47. Ella doesn’t count
This dad isn’t a dog person. Oh, his dog Ella? Ella doesn’t count.
48. The best hat
Dads need to think of creative ways to keep their balding heads warm. Maybe wear a dog they “hate” as a hat?
49. The man who didn’t want a dog
This man’s face says a lot. What it DOESN’T say is that he doesn’t want a dog. He clearly loves this pup.
50. I want NOTHING to do with it
Oh, is that so dad? Why did we all come downstairs to find you fast asleep after a night of snuggles with the pup then?
We love our dogs and we love our dads. They can pretend all they want, but we’ve caught on. We know their tricks. It’s just funny because dogs ALWAYS know how to get into a heart, even a callous one.
