In India, street dogs are a very prevalent problem and one that not many organizations want or have the resources to deal with. Fortunately, one group called Animal Aid Unlimited does their best to help when they can, even in the direst circumstances.

Recently, the group got a call that there was a street dog that had been hit by a car and was unable to walk. The sad part was that the dog didn’t seem to understand what had happened to him—he knew he should be able to walk but didn’t seem to be able to. When they showed up to the scene, the animal was dragging the front half of his body around trying to stand.

One of the aid workers cautiously approached the animal though it tried to scramble away. After a minute or so of careful approach, the worker was able to pet the dog gently on its back to let it know there was no threat or danger. Though it looked like the trust had been earned, as soon as the worked took his hand away from the dog to get a blanket he tried to flee again. He was in so much pain and was so confused that he still wasn’t sure this man was trying to hurt him.

The struggle continued as the dog hid under a car even after the man got the blanket on top of him. He even tried barking and snarling at the man to scare him away. With patience and the help of a few other volunteers, they finally had the dog safe in a blanket. After arriving back at the Animal Aid Hospital, volunteers and staff members were able to work with the poor guy to help nurse him back to health.

The accident had caused lots of trauma and inflicted some damage on his spinal cord, causing nerve damage in his legs. Although most of these injuries are irreversible, the staff were determined to do physical therapy and try their best to rejuvenate the animal. After weeks and months of patience and focus, something miraculous happened.

Though he has a bit of a limp now, the dog (now named Georgie) is back up and walking around on all fours—and he couldn’t be happier. Though this story is amazing on its own merit, it also raises awareness for street animals and how hard it can be to care for them. Organizations like Animal Aid Unlimited in India do what they can, but they often rely on donations. If this story moved you, please consider donating through their website. To the patient and kind volunteers at Animal Aid, we salute you.
