Disney’s Fox and the Hound were an unlikely animal pairing on the big screen, but have you heard of their real life counterparts, the Buck and the Pooch?
It all started when this little hellion of a husky, who lives in Manitoba, Ontario, went missing back in December. That’s when Koda’s concerned owner, Rachel Howatt, posted the dog’s mug on social media, along with a plea to find the lost puppers.
Thankfully, Rachel got lucky and three days later her doggo just came back home on her own, pretending like nothing had happened.
But of course, a lot happened. She was hiding a secret and it was all caught on film!
In an interview with The Dodo, Rachel said that although she definitely searched for her beloved puppers, she had a feeling Koda would come back unharmed.
“We definitely searched for her, but in the end she just came back. She is really smart, so I didn’t doubt she could find her way home.”
It wasn’t until three weeks later when Rachel checked her neighbor’s trail cam that she discovered what the sneaky little girl had really been up to.
Since Rachel’s neighbor has a trail camera that catches everything that goes on in the woods, she thought it’d be fun to see if it had caught Koda doing anything unusual. It may even explain where she had been, and why she was gone for so long.
Sure enough, footage showed Koda hanging out in the woods like it was her second home. But, she wasn’t by herself!
Looks like this friendly doggo was meeting up with a new friend she’d made. He was a buck with no name, but he must have had lots of charm to pull in a pretty lady like this.
Trail cam photos captured a series of sweet interactions between the two. The wild buck was in almost every scene with Koda, eating, sleeping, and curling up next to his new BFF.
This isn’t exactly an encounter you see every day! How they met, or why they even hit it off, is anyone’s guess.
But, the pictures show that Koda and the male deer must have really liked each other. They spent the better of 12 hours together playing, frolicking together, and enjoying each other’s company.
This wasn’t just a quickie, fly-by-night encounter, either. They spent a good chunk of time enjoying canoodling. Rachel said that:
“It was quite something. Based on the time they spent on frame, it looked like they spent over 12 hours together. There’s also another photo where there’s two bucks in the picture with her.”
Two bucks and a husky. Now that sounds like the start of something rather naughty!
As strange as a sighting like this seems, it’s actually not unusual for wild animals like deer to make friends with strays. They’ve been known to befriend all sorts of critters, from cats to cows, and everything in between. It’s just in their nature to be like Bambie!
Although Rachel is doing everything possible to make sure Koda doesn’t run off again, her gut says her dog will probably do everything to keep up her newfound friendship. Even if that means sneaking off in the middle of the night for a peck on the cheek!
In the end, this pup’s wayward behavior isn’t all that surprising.
“Huskies have such a free spirit. It doesn’t surprise me at all that Koda was trying to make a new friend.”
