When Renee Perry’s dog went missing back in June 2016, she thought she’d never see her again.

The dog, named Bay, was only one-and-a-half years old when she disappeared from a dog sitters house in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Renne searched in vain for months after Bay had gone missing, but eventually, she had to admit defeat. There was just no knowing where the little dog had ended up.

That was until one day, five years later, when Renee received an unexpected call.

A dog fitting Bay’s description had been found in Needham, around 10 miles from where she went missing.

Since it had been five years since she’d disappeared, Renee was naturally skeptical.

“I didn’t believe it at first. I saw the pictures, and it did look like her but her nose was darker; she just looked heavier; she just looked different,” she told CBS Boston

For anyone whose beloved pet has gone missing, there’s eventually a time where you have to stop wondering about where they can be or what happened to them, simply for your own sanity.

So although Bay remained in Renee’s heart, she had stopped thinking about a possible reunion a long time ago.

“I did like to think about what it would like if I were to get her back. It was a pleasant surprise. I mean, a shock. A complete shock,” Renee said. “To get her back … I think it’s an understatement to say it’s a miracle because it’s just crazy. It’s surreal.”

A couple discovered Bay wandering outside their home and reached out to Missing Dogs Massachusetts, who then set up a kennel trap in the yard.

Since Renee had microchipped Bay, it wasn’t long until the rescue center has traced back her owner, and now they just had to wait for Renee to finish work so they could let her know the happy news.

“It was probably within a couple hours of trapping her and her microchip was scanned that we found out her story, and as soon as Renee got out of work, she was reunited with her,” said Deb Newport, a volunteer with Missing Dogs Massachusetts.

Once Renee got over her initial shock, she was overjoyed to be reunited with her beloved dog.

Thanks to Bay’s microchip, and the caring family who helped to get her found, Renee could be reunited with a dog that she thought she was never going to see again.

“To the family that let them set up a cage in their yard, I’m forever thankful for them,” she said.

Nobody knows where Bay has lived for the past five years, but one thing’s for sure- this little dog was determined to stay alive!

“I’m amazed she survived five New England winters. But yeah, a resilient little dog,” said Danielle Matthew, a Missing Dogs Massachusetts volunteer.

Now that Bay is back in her life again, Renee plans to take things slowly to help the little dog settle back into domesticated life.

“Take those baby steps. Go back to putting the leash on her and trying to get her to walk on a leash and that’s our goal, to keep going where we left off five years ago,” said Perry.
