This is one conversation he isn't going to win.

They’re majestic creatures with elegant necks, massive bodies and broad blocky heads. They’re also one of a handful of giant breeds in the world with huge hearts and even bigger attitudes.

The Great Dane breed originated in England and was bred to aggressively hunt wild boar and deer. Throughout the centuries, though, they’ve morphed into one of the biggest and sweetest lapdogs out there — or at least they try to be.

Their feelings can be crushed with a stern warning for doing something they know they shouldn’t have done in the first place. They’ll also ferociously protect their home and their humans to the very end.

One thing some Danes are known for is their sassy backtalk. Some of these gentle giants are the most lovable, loyal creatures with magnetic personalities.

Others, like my own Great Dane, will spout off just like a disgruntled teenager on the precipice of being grounded.

You’ve probably heard tiny dogs yapping and spouting off at a bigger dog, trying to seem bigger, tougher and imposing. Oftentimes tiny dogs surprisingly terrorize Great Danes.

Then there’s the yippers who bark incessantly when they’re nervous, scared or angry, which is often for these high strung breeds. Of course, there’s the talker who just loves to carry on a conversation with Mom or Dad or anyone who will listen for that matter.

Finally, there’s the complainer, a description that fits Great Dane Max perfectly. This beautiful black and white Great Dane lives at an equally beautiful home. He’s wearing a shirt for therapeutic reasons that covers his front left leg and wraps over his shoulder.

He wants so badly to go for a swim, but he can’t right now. His human mom poses a question that sparks the grandest of all Great Dane temper tantrums.

“What are you doing?”

He howls back at her, a most pathetic sound quite honestly. Mom explains why he can’t take a dip.

“You know you can’t go swimming with your jacket on.”

Max howls some more and it’s the most pathetic sound. He hits some high notes and low notes during his vocal tirade.

Mom tells him no several times as Max tempts her, approaching the edge of the steps leading down to the rippling waves of water.

He whines and whines and even whimpers a bit, raising such a fuss all because his mom won’t let him go for a swim.

“Oh such complaining! Oh are you kidding? You know you can’t go swimming with your clothes on. But you can complain! ‘Oh come on, Mom. Take my jacket off.'”

Max glances around him, a four-legged buddy sitting complacently behind him watching the excitement unfold before him.

He pauses if only for a moment, then launches right back into his tantrum. At one point, he actually contemplates dipping a paw in the water and walks precariously close to the edge, then barks at his mom to show his displeasure with her decision to not let him swim.

“I figured out how to keep you out of the pool.”

Max backs up and whines some more, super sad about not being able to doggie paddle a few laps.

“I can’t figure out how to keep you from complaining though. Funny Max.”

Check out Max’s silly canine antics in the video below. He’s quite the character!
