Toby is a masterful negotiator. He knows they won't go to bed until he agrees to come inside, so he's laying out his "terms of agreement". 😼

Who has ever had trouble getting their cat to obey?

Getting cats to obey is one of life’s challenges for every cat parent. It can be done, yes, but at a great cost. Just joking.

Not about the “get cats to obey” part, though. We’re joking about the idea that cats can be controlled.

Cats aren’t known for their “obedience”.

It’s actually part of what makes them so lovable. They are their own beings and we’re just lucky to be graced by their presence, and that only when they choose.

Just ask Toby’s parents.

Nighttime was already well underway in California when Toby was still chilling on his decked-out covered “catio” his owners built for him.

His humans called him from inside the house but Toby didn’t want to leave, and he firmly made his owners aware that he had zero intentions of acquiescing to their request.

Toby did climb the shelf and walked the plank that would take him inside, but this was just to get close enough to tell his parents no.

The feistiness is strong with this one.

As soon as he did that, he went back to his resting spot on the ground. And he kept crying out.

Now we don’t speak any cat language but judging from the tone of his voice, it sounded like a lot of complaints.

Then the bribes came.

Mom cried out to Toby and said they had yogurt for him.

“Toby, can you come in and get some yogurt?” Toby’s mom said.

Toby responded, but he didn’t budge.

Then Mom tried reasoning with Toby about why he should come inside.

He needed to drink his medicine for his tummy troubles.

Toby moved and it looked like he was going to go inside.

It was a fakeout, though.

Toby was simply moving in to groom himself as he happily ignored his parent’s pleas.

Toby stood up again and stalled bedtime as much as he could until he got too tired to argue.

Finally, he walked the plank and went inside for his yogurt and medicine.

Let it be known that Toby went inside on his own because he wanted to. Not because he was required.

Cats were “worshipped” in ancient culture.

This might be why Toby resents being told when to come in, when to eat, and when to sleep.

He will do things on his own time in the way he wants to do them.

They were also regarded as deities and were worshipped as such.

In fact, during the time of Pharaohs, it was a crime to kill cats. If your house was on fire, you always save the cats first. If a cat dies, humans need to go into mourning.

Cats never forgot this, which is probably why Toby’s confused a commoner dares tell him what to do.

While Toby eventually went inside, it took his humans a lot of coaxing and bribing to get him to do it.

So, who’s really the winner here?
