Animal shelter staff are modern day heroes. They take care of helpless animals that have no decent shelter and don’t get enough food. Not only that, they also help address health issues with the help of veterinarians. That way, animals like cats and dogs can stay clean, healthy, and happy while they wait for the right adoptive family to meet them.

Irresponsible pet ownership is a significant contributing factor in overpopulation of animals in shelters. Some are eager to care for their own cat or dog but end up leaving the innocent animal at the shelter in only a matter of weeks. Strays are also often brought in and kept safe from harsh weather and surroundings that pose risks like being run over by cars or attacked by other animals.

Dedicated animal shelter staff don’t give up even in the midst of overcrowding. They rack their brains to come up with creative solutions that get the entire community involved.

Events are organized not just to find good homes for the animals but to raise awareness on what it’s like for homeless animals and what responsible pet ownership should be.

Wayside Waifs, an animal shelter in Kansas City, Missouri came up with a similar event which they called #AdoptathonKC.

The event offers all pet adoptions for only $35. The team set a limit to only one puppy adoption for household. With this event, they also make sure each animal will indeed be going to a warm and loving home.

Incredibly enough, #AdoptathonKC was a massive success. A total of 203 animals which included cats, dogs, and guinea pigs were adopted.

But there was one sweetheart that remained.

A Pit bull terrier mix named Kenny was the only dog that didn’t get adopted.

This perplexed the Wayside Waifs team. After all, Kenny was fun, friendly, and happy dog who loves cuddling, playing in the park, exercising, and basically just being on the go.

“Kenny was the only adoptable dog left in our shelter at the end of our adoption promo. He is a fantastic guy who met some great families but not his forever family. Until then, Kenny will be safe and loved.”

Even though they couldn’t understand why he was the only animal overlooked during the event, they put in all their efforts to find the perfect home for Kenny.

This included putting together a profile for Kenny on their Facebook page. Along with beautiful photos of the lovable dog, the team wrote,

“I’m a handsome, 2 year old, 47 pound bundle of energy with a gorgeous coat and a lovable personality. I came to Wayside as a transfer from the SPCA in Louisiana when they were running short on space. I’m game for anything, so I was happy to relocate to the Midwest. I’m quite popular here and I’ve managed to get involved in everything Wayside has to offer. What I long for though is a home and family of my very own.”

“I’m confident, athletic, and I have a knack for reading people really well. I love the agility park. It makes me feel happy to accomplish the exercises and I have so much fun! I’ve also joined the Wayside Runner’s Program, where I’m a green list runner, meaning I’m focused, I keep a nice pace, and I make an overall great running partner.”

“I’m also an affectionate dog who loves attention from you. I like to get my belly rubbed and I like to curl up next to you and cuddle. I also enjoy playing with toys and I can entertain myself with them if you’re busy with other stuff. I’ll make a really wonderful companion for you!”

It didn’t take long for this profile to reach the right person.

The adoption counselors could tell the decision was a well thought out one. When she visited the shelter to make things official, the team were as helpful as can be when they discussed Kenny’s needs and how to effectively provide mental and physical activity for the dog.

Now, Kenny has a new mom who understands that the happy Pit bull terrier mix is a high energy dog who won’t do so well in a home with small children, and would thrive best if he was the only dog in the house.
