The following story reminds us of how amazing dogs truly are.

Four-year-old Rena Harthi found herself lost in the woods of southeastern Manitoba. Unnoticed by her babysitter, she slipped out to chase her dog Max into the forest.

This was in the rural La Broquerie municipality, where even a fully grown adult would not want to venture out alone. Rena’s mother, Elvira Harthi, says that her daughter is adventurous and really loves her dog.

And that’s what got her into trouble.

So Constable Garfield Henderson of the Steinbach RCMP canine unit and his trusty furry sidekick, Enzo, responded to the call.

They set out to find the missing girl in the Canadian woods.

Enzo’s expertly trained nose soon picked up the trail, which led him and Henderson to Rena who was about one kilometer away from the property.

“I cast my dog into that area and immediately located a track,” Henderson says to CTV News. “Within 15 minutes, we located the young girl crying in the middle of the bush.”

Rena was missing for a little more than an hour, which feels like forever to a child.

What happened was she was able to crawl under two barbed wire fences. Unfortunately, Rena couldn’t find her way back home.

When she saw Const. Garfield and his trusty companion, the scared little girl knew she was going to be alright.

“Enzo came right up to her and she gave him a big pet on the head,” Henderson said. “Then she jumped into my arms and locked onto my neck and we walked out of the bush.”

Rena’s mother was relieved.

“It was a nightmare,” she said. “It’s still a little shocking for me.”

It was a situation no mother wants to find herself in.

Four-year-old Rena was of course a little wet and scared when Enzo found her. She was a little shaken but otherwise unhurt.

Elvira was super grateful to the RCMP for all their efforts in locating and bringing her daughter back to her safe and sound.

“It was a blessing for me,” Elvira said.

The Steinbach RCMP praised Henderson and Enzo owing to their “very fast and successful conclusion” to a situation that could have been much worse.

“That’s what I’m here to do,” Henderson said. “That’s one of the best calls I’ve worked in my career as a dog handler.”

As for Rena’s babysitter, no one knows why she didn’t have her eye on the little girl. But it’s fortunate that the story had a happy ending.

Viewers in the comments section were relieved as well.

“A shout out to Officer Henderson and his awesome dog for making this a wonderful ending! You both deserve tons of hugs for a job well done!” says one.

Rena gave Henderson a hug, and we suspect she has become really good friends with Enzo, her rescuer.

Enzo is a hero and a very good boy for finding a child in the woods. According to the news station, he was rewarded with a juicy hamburger for his great work!
