When Kim Still officially became a nurse about four years ago, she was excited about having the chance to help people and offer to the community.
She has been a nurse at Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Georgia for some time, and she has always tried to be close to her patients so that they don’t feel alone and that they know that someone cares about them.
However, one of her patients recently stood out because of her special story which involved a small dog.
An elderly patient who was recently admitted to the hospital where Still works had a Chihuahua. The woman was terminally ill and she couldn’t stop worrying about what would happen to her dog after her passing.
The woman didn’t have any children or close family, so some family members who flew to Georgia at the time let the nurse know that the dog would be surrendered to the local animal shelter.
However, this made Still even more worried about Jax the Chihuahua. She couldn’t stop thinking that once at the shelter, Jax would end up either with a family or he would be put down after some time.
But even if he did get adopted, the young nurse wasn’t sure that his new family would love him and that his life would be happy from then on.
So, she decided to act. She went to the animal shelter determined to adopt Jax and take him home where he would enjoy life in his new forever home with Still and her other dog.
Still made sure to adopt the dog while the elderly patient was still alive so that she could pass peacefully.
“I could have never guessed the connection that you develop with some people when you take care of them,” she said. “They just totally changed my life.”
Indeed, the woman, who had built a special connection with her favorite nurse, got to see Still adopting Jax and she was relieved to know that her best friend would have a safe and loving home in the years to come.
“I am never going to get rid of him. He is so sweet. He is one of the most loving dogs ever,” Still told 23 ABC.

The nurse was awarded the Daisy Award, “for extraordinary compassion by her hospital coworkers for her heartwarming gesture”.
As the Daisy Foundation wrote in an Instagram post, Kim’s gesture of adopting her patient’s dog was one of compassion for both her patient and the pet itself.
People have praised the young nurse for her act of care and empathy.
“Awesome Kim you are awesome and amazing person I hope one day if this ever happens to me and someone in my family doesn’t want my fur baby that there will be an amazing person like you step up and take them in,” someone wrote.
