Just a couple of months ago, the Dogs Without Borders rescue organization from Los Angeles saved two adorable pups who had nowhere to go to.
When the rescuers first found them, it was clear that these two four-footers had been through something horrible.
The two puppies were still extremely tiny and young, and they were found lying next to her mom, who already passed away. Her death was absolutely tragic: she was clearly stabbed to death and whoever did this even cut he womb directly in half.
One thing was absolutely clear when they rescued these pups: these brothers were inseparable. The crew decided to name them Han and Solo, a reference to one of the main characters in the Star Wars universe.
“Last November we opened our doors to a pair of deeply bonded dogs: Han & Solo. They are brothers who were discovered as tiny puppies, lying next to the broken body of their mother who had been stabbed to death, her womb cut in half. She was likely killed just for sport,” the Dogs Without Borders organization posted on their Facebook page.
The animal organization received a call by a kind woman who found the two pups on the street, and they arrived on the scene shortly after.
If they hadn’t been found, these puppies probably wouldn’t have lasted very long.
“The Good Samaritan who found them and who lives in a country where dogs are not safe, sent them here to Los Angeles to try to find a home where they would never be hurt again. She told us they had deeply bonded to each other. She was right. We have never seen a more deeply bonded pair of dogs. Perhaps it is because of their very traumatic early experience, we don’t know, but they have been inseparable.”
Even though these two have been through an absolutely traumatic event, the canines have always been kind, loving and affectionate – both towards each other and humans.
“When one moves, the other moves. They are almost always in physical contact with one another. They are friendly, loving, house-trained young dogs. About 8 months old, 40 pounds.”
Because they didn’t want to separate these two pups, finding someone to adopt both proved to be quite the challenge.
The animal rescuers got in touch with dozens of families in search of a warm and kind new nest, but nobody was willing to adopt both Han and Solo. They tried for months at a time but to no avail. Even foster homes didn’t want to take both in, as they were forced to move from home to home while waiting for a more permanent place to stay.
To make matters worse, both Han and Solo suffered from medical issues.
The veterinarian diagnosed Han with a virus that wasn’t extremely severe or threatening and should only affect the pup for a few weeks, but it’s quite contagious meaning he couldn’t get nearby other pups. A couple of weeks later, Solo was diagnosed with the same virus – it’s likely he was infected by Han. At least with both having the same virus, they didn’t have to be separated for long.
Nonetheless, their medical issue made finding a home even more difficult. Ideally, they were hoping to find a family that didn’t already have pups and would be willing to care for these two Star Wars cuties.
They were running out of options – but decided to post one final heartfelt plea on their Facebook page.
“So we are devastated, but we are simply out of options. We are going to have to adopt Han and Solo out separately unless a miracle happens. Like fast. We are heartbroken. But we don’t know what else we can do. So this is the final plea for a home where Han & Solo can remain together.”
To their surprise, it went viral.
Over twenty thousand people on Facebook immediately shared the post with their friends, and the plea was literally seen by millions. Of all of those people, they were hoping that there had to be one who was willing to adopt them both!
Their plea proved to be successful. Days later, they already had numerous applications. Plenty of people got in touch with Dogs Without Borders to adopt both Han and Solo!
“Well, you guys made it happen. We put up a plea for a miracle and you handed us one. We had zero expectation that our post would land on the right ears, but we knew we owed it to these two to try one final plea. And then, wow! We have never ever had this kind of response to a post. Because of your sharing, this post hit over one million people. And we had not just one, but several amazing adoption applications for Han and Solo.”
Ultimately, a very kind and warm family from the Los Angeles area took both of them in. With a large garden and experience having larger pup siblings before, this family seemed to be a great fit! Everybody – both humans and pups – gets along with each other extremely well.
Han and Solo finally found their loving forever home where they will get all the love and affection they deserve – together.
