Some stories are so wonderful they remind us of the movies! While humans are usually the starring character in those movies, this one has a different kind of lead – a dog! The story of one pitbull shows us just how far love and kindness can go.
In Baltimore, one day, rescuers got a call that a dog was in rough shape.
The day that they got the call was HOT. When the callers phoned in, they let rescuers know that the dog they saw was left on a vacant property and couldn’t do anything to escape. With no windows or electricity on the property, they knew it was a race for time.
When they finally found the dog, they weren’t a second too soon.
The pitbull was overheated and severely dehydrated from its lack of water and air. The poor dog was also overbred as they could see that her skin on her stomach wasn’t elastic like it should be. The team decided to name her Winter and brought her back to the shelter.
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) helped Winter get healthy again.
When she was finally healthy, all that was left was for her to be adopted! For shelters, this is the most exciting part of the job because they get to see their dogs go out and live with a loving family.
Unfortunately, Winter wasn’t getting any attention.
Winter was older in years, was part pit bull, and had a physical deformity from her overbreeding. All of these combined to make a dog that people looked over without even intending it.
One day, everything changed for Winter.
A man and his friends walked into the shelter. Ronnie Stanley, an NFL player, his girlfriend, and his teammate, Alexander Lewis, all made an imposing squad as they walked up to the front desk.
Ronnie said something that shocked the shelter.
Walking to the desk, Ronnie asked:
“We are looking for a dog that’s been here a long time and maybe not-so-adoptable.”
When BARCS realized what this meant, they were ecstatic.
“Our BARCS staff showed Ronnie and his girlfriend a few pets that fit his (seriously awesome) criteria. Winter was the lucky dog that caught Ronnie’s eye.”
When they came across Winter, it was clear.
Ronnie and his girlfriend saw the pitbull and knew it was a match. Some shelter volunteers heard him say, “Well, that’s just what happens when you’ve had babies.” when he saw her belly.
The couple took Winter home that day!
Signing the papers and getting everything in order, the couple took their pup home with them! Ronnie is an advocate for adoption and even has another dog named Rico.
Nowadays, Winter (now Lola) is doing wonderfully.
With a loving family and all the snuggles she could ever want, Lola is as happy as can be. Ronnie even filmed a video to advocate for adopting pets! For Lola, it truly was a fairy-tale story.
