Moving is never easy, and it can be especially hard on a pet. Dogs are creatures of habit, and they don’t like when their daily routines are changed. One pup, in particular, found it very difficult to adjust to his new home
Charleston Chew is an adorable pug who has recently moved with his owner to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The move wasn’t easy for the 11 year old pup, and he had a hard time adjusting to his new life.
Charleston now had to figure out the new layout of the land, and he didn’t like it one bit. When ever his owner was not by his side – even if she was in the next room over – the dog would let out a loud howl. The sounds were sorrowful and stress-inducing, and Charleston’s owner, Sharla Wilson, worried that the noise would disturb her new neighbors.
Thinking quick, Sharla came up with the perfect way to let her neighbors know what was going on. She drafted a note and taped it to her front door. It read:
“Hello Neighbors!
My name is Charleston Chew, and I’m very sorry for my howling.
I’m an old man now, with cataracts, and sometimes I get real scared because I can’t see where I am and can’t find my mom.
As I get used to my new place, I will start to settle down.
Thanks for being patient with me, I don’t mean to be such a pain.
Charleston Chew Pug”
Now all Sharla needed to do was wait to see how the neighbors would react. She must have been nervous that they would become angered by the loud noise. After all, the rest of the place was certainly silent.
“It’s a quiet building and I just didn’t want anyone losing sleep or getting upset over his challenges to adjusting,” Sharla wrote to Upworthy. “This isn’t something he just does when I’m away at work. If I’m in another room or in the shower, he’ll howl for me if he wakes up and I’m not by his side.”
Sharla was worried the neighbors might be upset by all the howling, but inste,ad the community showed compassion. They fell in love with this pug’s sweet face, and they felt for his struggle.
One of Sharla’s neighbors even posted a picture of the note on Twitter with the caption: “You howl all you want Charleston, honey.”
The image went viral. Soon people all over the world were swooning over this adorable dog. The image even got back to Sharla’s landlord, who couldn’t believe how popular it had become.
Charleston and his owner definitely have good times together, and this is only one piece of their long, loving journey. When Sharla first got her beloved pet, he was 5 weeks old and weighed less than 3 pounds. He wobbled more than he walked, but he had a secure place in his owner’s heart.
“I’m a big proponent of adoption and wasn’t in the market for a dog,” Sharla shared. “That being said, as soon as I saw his tiny little face, he had my heart.”
The pup has been more than a friend; he has been a whole support system for Sharla. “Charleston has been my constant through some of the biggest struggles and obstacles I’ve faced,” the owner explained. “He’s been a steadfast source of laughter and joy. He has been a driving force of renewal and hope during my darkest days. He is the embodiment of the purest form of unconditional love this world has to offer.”
Soon the world found out how much this dog meant to the woman, and the internet shared in their camaraderie. Charleston is burdened by a series of health problems, including diabetes, and the costs of keeping him healthy can be overwhelming at times. “I stretch myself to try and give him the best life after all that he’s given me,” Sharla admitted.
Soon big brand companies were eager to show support for this dynamic duo. PetSmart has offered a free shopping spree to the pug, while WyzeCam has donated a camera so that Sharla can keep an eye on her pup while she is away. 1-800-PetMeds is even sending a goodie basket filled with calming tabs, and activity monitor, and other helpful items.
The generosity she has been shown means the world to Sharla, because with it she can better provide for her pet. “To be able to give him a bit more and get some things that were beyond my means is just incredible.”
“This outpouring of love has been the most comforting experience,” Sharla stated. “I see Charleston as this unique and wonderful little guy and to feel so many people experiencing that with me has been inconceivably fulfilling. His big heart has touched people and it’s beautiful to feel that I’m not alone in my sentiment.”
We certainly wish these two all the best in their new home.
