Rescued people rescue people.
In this case, “people” also applies to animals, like this rescued horse who in turn rescued a donkey.
When Dream arrived at Skydog Ranch and Sanctuary, she was the most emaciated and skinniest horse they ever took in at the sanctuary.
Dream was the victim of the most extreme starvation case they have ever heard of and rescued.
Dream was 20 years old.
When she arrived at the sanctuary, she was almost dead. They had no idea what happened in the first 20 years of her life but it doesn’t matter.
What matters now is that they have her and they can work on healing her.
Clare Staples, Skydog’s founder and president, was determined to do two things: make her healthy and help her trust humans again.
It was a tall order.
But Clare committed to doing it. She was off to a good start anyway because Dream already trusted Clare enough to go with her to the sanctuary.
Maybe because Clare kept reassuring Dream, caressing her, and apologizing to her.
Dream probably felt Clare’s sincere love and care, which she had never felt before.
βYou could see how weak she was, but you could see a tiny spark of life in her eyes,β Clare told The Dodo. βAnd that little light just grew and grew and grew every day.β
That’s all Clare needed to rehabilitate Dream.
Every day, Clare stroked Dream’s neck and told her that things were going to be alright. She was in a safe place, where everyone will take care of her.
As soon as the sun came up, Clare would go to Dream’s stable. When she didn’t see her, Clare would call out to Dream while she walked over to where Dream stayed.
Eventually, Clare would arrive at Dream’s stable to find her already waiting at the fence.
Such big progress for a scared horse.
It really helped that Clare and Dream developed a very personal connection with each other, which Dream really felt.
That’s why, six months later, Dream is almost healed. She’s now eating as much as she wants, which is a lot.
Dream runs around.
She’s even getting back up when she’s down on the ground. Dream now has so much energy, she has no idea what to do with it.
One thing Clare and the sanctuary didn’t do was contain Dream. They let her run around, burning off all that energy.
Then “Joe Pesci” arrived.
It wasn’t until a rescued donkey from Texas named Joe Pesci arrived that Dream knew exactly where to put all her energy.
She was going to take care of Joe Pesci. Joe didn’t know that he would have a helicopter mom when he arrived.
Dream just followed Joe everywhere. They did almost everything together.
Joe was also sick when he arrived at the sanctuary. Dream knew that feeling all too well. That’s why taking him under her wing was a no-brainer.
Joe healed beautifully because he was “rescued” by a horse who understood what it felt like to need saving.
See what a miracle Dream was for Clare and Joe in the heartwarming video below!
