It is not uncommon for dogs to grieve the loss of a beloved owner. In fact, it seems to be the norm rather than the exception. For instance, there was the German Shepherd named Capitán, who decided to live full time at the cemetery when his owner, Miguel Guzman, suddenly died just a year after bringing Capitán home. Guzman reportedly bought the dog for his son, but the shepherd took to Guzman and remained loyal to him to his dying day, and beyond.
A dog named spot took to a gentleman named Wayne Giroux, who she used to meet on the side of an old country road every day. Wayne was killed in a drunk driving accident in 2010, but Spot continues to stand guard at her post all day, every day, waiting for Giroux to return. Paul, Giroux’s son, checks in on her twice a day, but he knows that it’s not him she wants to see.
Hachikō, an Akita, would wait at a local train station every day to meet his owner after work. When one day Hachikō’s owner failed to show up at the station, he became distraught. However, even in his grief, he continued to show up at the same time every day, waiting for his owner to arrive. He did this for nine years, until his death in 1935.
The stories are plentiful, but that doesn’t make any one of them any less heart-wrenching. One story that has recently garnered attention is that of a lonely dog in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China.
The loyal dog has posted at the site of his owner’s death for more than 80 days, standing vigil. The owner died on a busy road, but that doesn’t stop the dog from making the trek to the middle of the road. His vigil hasn’t gone unnoticed.
A user of the microblog Sina Weibo captured footage of the dog making his journey and stopping mid-road to sit for the remainder of the day. The video has garnered millions of views and captured the hearts of people across the globe.
According to China’s Pear Video website, the dog has been seen on the road every day since August 21.
One taxi driver said that he, among many others, has tried to help the pooch but that all efforts end in the dog being scared away. However, the dog does accept bits of food handed to him by passersby who don’t get out of their vehicles.
“This owner’s relationship with her dog was very deep,” says one witness of the vigil. “After she was killed, this little dog has just stayed standing guard.”
“Every day it’s in the road, I always see it. The relationship between man and dog is so true.”
The video was filmed on November 10th and since then it has been shared on Sina Weibo, the site used instead of Twitter or Facebook in China. Hundreds of users have been commenting on the “loyalty” of the dog.
One person said: “This little dog is so loyal. My family used to have a dog and every day it would wait for me by the village school.”
Another user was concerned for the welfare of the pet.
“It is so dangerous for that doggy to stand in the middle of the road. I hope that some good people can adopt it and take it to a safe place,” they said.
