In early May 2018, animal rescue group Parker Paws picked up a stray cat and her two newborn kittens from the streets of Weatherford, Texas.
Even though the mother cat had been living on her own for a long time, she was still as sweet as could be. Parker Paws named the kitty Aspen.
At around the same time, another cat had a litter of four kittens.
This cat lived at Sycamore Tree Ranch, a farm animal rescue and sanctuary in Springtown, Texas. For unknown reasons, this mama cat wasn’t nursing her kittens. So, Koby Wegge, the founder of Sycamore Tree Ranch, contacted Parker Paws and asked if they had mother cats who would be able to nurse the newborn kittens.
“Their mom didn’t really want anything to do with them,” Wegge told The Dodo. “We jumped in and started bottle-feeding them every two hours around the clock, and that’s when we thought of the idea of finding them a foster mom. We could give her a comfortable space to raise her own babies, and give our rescue kittens the chance to have a mom.”
Parker Paws immediately recommended Aspen. Along with her two biological babies, Aspen was also nursing another newborn kitten who had been dropped off at Parker Paws. The rescue group was sure maternal Aspen would also be happy to nurse Wegge’s kittens.
Parker Paws brought Aspen, her two babies, and the orphaned kitten to Sycamore Tree Ranch. Wegge introduced Aspen to her four kittens, and it was love at first sight!
Aspen loved her big family! She treated all seven kittens like they were her own.
A few days after Aspen and her kittens arrived at Sycamore Tree Ranch, Parker Paws called Wegge and told her they’d gotten another orphaned kitten who was found crawling around on a lawn all alone. Wegge agreed to take in this kitten too. She introduced the kitten to Aspen, and Aspen immediately accepted her.
“Of course we couldn’t leave that little baby at the shelter either,” Wegge said. “So now, she has eight babies from four different litters. She is the best mama to them and is so proud of her kittens.”
Since Aspen has such a big family, Wegge knows she needs some help caring for them. So, Wegge and her daughter bottle-feed the kittens a few times a day to give Aspen a little break.
Aspen and the kittens will stay at Sycamore Tree Ranch for the next seven weeks, or until the kittens are ready to be weaned.
After that, Wegge and Parker Paws will begin looking for forever homes for all the cats. However, Wegge is thinking of keeping some of the cats. She has completely fallen in love with Aspen.
“We’re really getting attached to her,” Wegge said. “She’s such a sweet cat, and the best mom.”
Aspen is a sweet cat who has tons of love to give. This loving cat is an amazing mom!
