Alaska is a beautiful place full of stunning and scenery and tons of unique animals. The state is also gigantic, and some animals that live there can go their whole lives without seeing a human. Which makes it extra surprising that a moose chose to have her baby around humans.
The moose chose to give birth in the parking lot of a Lowe’s hardware store in Ancourage.
The mom and her newborn were first noticed by Katherine Warren when she showed up for a shopping trip with her family.
Her daughter pointed out the moose — which was a peculiar thing to see to begin with — and then that’s when Warren noticed the baby.
Security at Lowe’s was immediately notified of the moose. In order to protect her, a safe zone was created and shoppers gave the new mom her space.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game was also notified and on-call in case a risk arose. Otherwise, the mom and newborn were safe to enjoy their space.
Respectful bystanders stood in crowds for hours as they watched this miraculous event.
It’s one thing to see something like this on TV, but there’s nothing more incredible than seeing it in real life. Bystanders were amazed at what they were getting the opportunity to witness.
Amongst the crowd was plenty of children. There is nothing funnier than having kids explain something that they might not fully understand. My favorite was the kid who when talking about the moose in the parking lot said, “she’s just doing her thing!”
In addition to being overall cool, witnessing this was also educational for a lot of the people in the crowd.
One mother used the opportunity as a time to educate her sons on how the calf will one day grow to be just as big as its giant mother. One woman who’d been in Alaska for more than 25 years claims that she has never seen something as incredible as this moment.
Watching the calf take its first steps is incredible. We can’t even imagine how cool it must have been to have witnessed it in person.
After being in the parking lot for nearly 9 hours, the mother and her calf left for their home in the woods perfectly happy and healthy.
This must have been a truly amazing thing to see in person, and we’re so glad the moose and her baby are both doing great. It’s also wonderful to see how respectful everyone is as they watch the moose give birth.
