It breaks our hearts to think that anyone out there could have it in them to hurt an animal, but sadly, cases of abuse are still common even in today’s society. Developing countries commonly have more issues with animal abuse and neglect, especially when the laws surrounding animal treatment are pretty lax.
So when we came across a story of a dog who lost all his legs after his owner’s neighbor cut them off in a fit of rage, our hearts were truly broken. The poor dog needed emergence veterinary treatment and couldn’t walk, but proving just how resilient dogs are, the brave animal decided that this wasn’t the end of the road for him.
Amazingly, although people predicted that the dog would not walk again, he was given a set of prosthetic legs and took to them instantly. His inspiring story has been shared with the world, and it’s enough to bring a tear to your eye.
An animal welfare group called Soi Dog Foundation were first on the scene when a Thai dog was discovered with his legs barbarically cut off. The poor animal had been subjected to the abuse by his owner’s neighbors, after he was caught chewing the neighbor’s shoes. Despite his owner’s efforts to pay for the damage, the neighbors decided to “teach the dog a lesson,” and horrifically attacked him with a sword, changing his life forever.
The Soi Dog Foundation rescued the dog, who they named Cola, and brought him straight to the vets for emergency treatment. They immediately fitted him with a pair of prosthetic legs, and while they weren’t the best, they helped Cola out a lot while he was adapting to his new life.
Cola used these legs for a short while, until his surgeon was able to fit him with an upgraded pair of legs. These were more state of the art ‘blades’, and allowed the pup to run and move around a lot more easily.
Cola took to his new legs instantly- and his life was about to make another positive change. Founder of the Soi Dog Foundation, Gill Daley, quickly fell in love with Cola, and having lost a leg in an accident herself, she decided that the pair would be perfect for each other.
Gill wasted no time in adopting Cola for herself, and she had the patience and personal understanding that was so important in helping Cola adapt to his new legs. The sweet pup now lives in his forever home with Gill, and the pair make the use of Cola’s prosthetic legs, enjoying lots of long walks on the beach together.
The story of Cola’s attack was posted onto YouTube by Inside Edition, and many people took to the YouTube comments to express their outrage towards the monster who attacked Cola. One person said:
“He took your $10 shoes and the neighbor took his legs….. Just plain evil.”
Another added:
“Why would someone do this? This culprit should be punished severely.”
A final person commented:
“Yea so a dog bites someone’s shoes….so they get revenge by slashing the dogs legs so he has to get prosthetics….pathetic.”
We have to agree! It doesn’t seem as if this neighbor had a shred of empathy for the poor dog. We’re so happy that Cola is now living the life he deserves! Watch his story below.
