Any parent would put up their fists to protect their kids.
And any animal would bear their fangs at the first sign of danger towards their young. This maternal drive is always present.
But what if those who approach only wanted to help? What if they wanted to take care of her young as much as she does? What if they wanted a better life for her just like the one she wanted for her kids?
A dog from South Africa showed this kind of fierceness.
In a video posted by the animal channel The Dodo, Maria snarls and growls at any person who walks close to her and her puppies.
All eight puppies nursed from under her while she kept her posture tight and tense. Her eyes followed everyone’s movements and her head darts from one threat to another.
Even when she’s feeding, she only afforded a short glance down her meal. She doesn’t know when or where the danger would come so she needed to be vigilant for her puppies.
The people who approached her were rescuers.
They assumed she was a stray dog. With eight puppies under her, the team knew how much she needed good healthy food and a place to raise her young.
They fed her and her puppies, but all the while, Maria kept her guard up. Even as her puppies enjoyed the food they got from strangers, Maria was always alert.
But she wasn’t a stray dog.
As they were feeding Maria and her puppies, her owner came out. Instead of chasing the rescuers away, Maria’s owner confessed their struggles.

They can and want to keep Maria, but they can’t afford to feed all nine dogs. They knew they had to let go of the puppies.
The rescuers gave them a proposition.
They asked the owner if it was okay for them to rehome all eight puppies. This will give them a chance to grow in loving forever homes where they can be the dog they dreamed themselves to be.
They also asked if they can spay Maria so she wouldn’t bear puppies anymore. This way, the owners are confident that they wouldn’t have puppies they can’t afford to raise.
The owners agreed but there’s one problem.
Maria is not about to give her pups up so easily. When she felt that they’re going to take her babies, she rushed under the house where the puppies quickly followed her.
Her hiding didn’t last long, though, when they bribed the little babies with treats and food. One by one, they pulled the puppies out from under the house.
Maria didn’t budge, though.
However, she was looking at her puppies longingly. She just wants them to be safe, and the rescuers wanted the same.
Eventually, through some coaxing from her owner, Maria emerged from under the house. But this time, she wasn’t as aggressive. Because at that time, she saw something that convinced her to be calm.
She saw her puppies unharmed.
At that point, she realized that these people wanted the best for them. And finally, after hours of putting her guard up, she trusted the rescuers. She took their food and rode their car, as long as she’s with her puppies.
Months later, her kids were rehomed into loving forever homes. Maria, meanwhile, spends her time with her own family, living happily knowing that her puppies have grown well.
