Those passing by the Inspirada neighborhood of Las Vegas, Nevada, reported seeing an eerie sight.
It was Ghost.
The white dog was wild and living with a pack of coyotes.
Some even believed that Ghost was leading the pack of coyotes.
Locals say that it’s likely that Ghost was abandoned in the woods when he was about seven or eight months.
The coyotes then took him on and raised him as one of their own pups.
Ghost became a local phenomenon when residents would spot him in the neighborhood.
But Ghost didn’t get his name because of his white color. He got his name because he would always disappear after being approached.
After about seven months, local trappers decided to keep tabs on him and try to rescue him after they saw him limping.
“He was actually just running with them and eating with them, but then he started to limp, and we were afraid limping that the coyotes could turn on him,” Susan McMullen of the Southern Nevada Trapping Team said.
The trappers spent days trying to locate Ghost, very nervous about his well-being.
They were finally able to capture him by placing food into a crate.
He walked right into that crate. The trappers said that Ghost seemed relieved to be out of the wild and back in the hands of people who could take care of him.
Despite being raised in the desert away from people, Ghost is actually very friendly and gets along with humans well.
“He is the sweetest, most loving dog. … He comes up to you. He wants to be petted. He wants to be held,” McCullen’s partner Timi Zondiros said.
But Ghost’s wild past was still visible. He had lots of scars on his face and body from getting into fights.
He also had ear and eye infections along with skin infections.
He’ll need his scrotum and a broken toe removed. The poor thing was even found with rocks in his belly.
It’s likely he ate them out of desperation for being hungry. Ghost will also require crate and leash training.
He also has a difficult time at night.
He doesn’t sleep and just paces around. But once Ghost gets used to indoor life, he will be placed for adoption into a loving home.
Unfortunately, law enforcement ended up confiscating Ghost and a legal battle is ensuing after someone claimed that Ghost was their dog.
In the meantime, he is staying with The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas.
However, the Southern Nevada Trapping Team claims he is being denied the medical care he needs in the process.
“Sadly, Ghost’s popularity on social media and in the news, coupled with his successful Go Fund Me, brought out all sorts of individuals claiming that Ghost was their dog,” their Facebook page says.
A lawyer has been hired to deal with the matter.
