The Closier family was in a terrible frenzy looking for their dog Bonnie, who had gone missing.
Little did they know that the five-year-old beagle mix was out winning an award.
“When she was missing, I had five different outcomes in my head, the best being that she came back,” dad Peter Closier told SWNS. “This was even better than that; she came back with a rosette.”
Bonne is believed to have escaped the family home through an open gate, leaving her family to search all over their home and West Sussex, England, neighborhood for her.
They had their two daughters and neighbors all looking for the dog, who they were worried sick about. They also reported Bonnie’s disappearance to the police, local vets, and animal shelters to try and track her down.
Thankfully, she was in safe hands. John Wilmer saw Bonnie on the side of the road on his way to a dog show in Surrey with his own two dogs.
Since he was running late, he brought Bonnie along to ensure she stayed safe.
He also posted a photo of her on Facebook to try and see if he could find her owner. Fortunately, the Closiers ended up seeing Wilmer’s post and got in contact with him to get their dog back.
“I was in a bit of a rush to get there when we found Bonnie and put her in the car. I left a message on Facebook before taking her to the show,” Wilder told BBC.
But since Wilmer was at a dog show anyway, he decided to enroll Bonnie in the “Best Rescue Dog” category of the competition.
“She was such a lovely dog, I thought it’d be good to enter her. I was so pleased she did so well,” Wilmer said.
Bonnie ended up winning third place and brought herself home a lovely rosette to commemorate her win.
“Bonnie was absolutely fine when she got back. She just thought she was having a great day out,” Peter Closier said.
The Closiers, who rescued Bonnie from the streets of Crete, Greece, said they found the whole ordeal to be absolutely hysterical.
“We found her adventure lovely and funny,” Peter Closier told The Dodo. “[She’s] a free spirit. She’s lovely, never negative, tail always wagging.”
The Closiers are even considering entering Bonnie in competitions in the future so she can flex her new award-winning skills.
“We might,” Closier said. “She obviously enjoys them.”
In the meantime, the Closiers are just happy to have the beloved Bonnie back home with them.
“We were frantic as we live right by a main road. Bonnie used to be a street dog and we were so worried she wouldn’t have known to come back,” said Paula Closier. “She’s had such a full life. When John brought her back to us with a rosette we couldn’t believe it. It’s a shame she didn’t come first in the show. We’re so thrilled she’s safe and well and also a winner. You couldn’t make this stuff up.”
