Meet Guy: a beagle with a true rags-to-riches story.
Guy was found wandering around on his own in the woods in rural Kentucky. He was picked up by animal control and brought to a high-kill shelter. Even though the pup was only three years old and had no behavioral issues, nobody wanted to adopt him. And so, the shelter started thinking about euthanizing him.
The shelter didn’t want to put the poor dog down, and so they decided to email Dolores Doherty, founder of Ontario-based rescue group A Dog’s Dream Rescue. Doherty agreed to take Guy in, and some of her volunteers drove down to Kentucky to pick up the dog.
In 2015, A Dog’s Dream Rescue took Guy with them to an adoption event in Ontario, Canada. There, Guy met the woman who would soon become his new owner: Meghan Markle.
“He was just sitting there with those big beagle sad eyes, looking so depressed,” Doherty told The Guardian. “He was irresistible.”
Meghan was shooting her show Suits in Toronto, and she decided to stop over at the adoption event. Doherty didn’t watch Suits and had no idea Meghan was a celebrity. She only found out about it when she went to a do home visit and had to make an appointment for security reasons!
Just like that, Guy went from a high-kill shelter to a loving home. Guy loved going for long walks and cuddling with Meghan and her other dog, Bogart. The dog was living the dream, and little did he know, his rags-to-riches journey wasn’t over yet!
In November 2017, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry famously announced their engagement. Meghan went to live with Prince Harry in England, and Guy was right at her side. She wasn’t able to bring Bogart with her because her veterinarian said the elderly dog wouldn’t survive the plane journey. But she found a great home for him with some of her friends.
Meghan and Guy settled into life in England, and Guy started to get used to his new royal digs.
When Meghan and Prince Harry got married on May 19, 2018, Meghan included Guy in her special day. Eagle-eyed royal wedding viewers spotted Guy in a car with Queen Elizabeth herself!
“It’s a total fairytale,” said Alison Preiss, who worked at the Ontario pet store where the adoption event was held. “Here is this dog that was in a shelter, nobody wanted him, and through this wonderful adoption he’s now living in a palace, running around with the royal family.”
Doherty was also so excited to see one of her sweet dogs in such a great home:
“It’s just beyond my wildest imagination,” she said.
Guy has gone on a truly remarkable journey since rescuers first found him wandering around the woods on his own. We can’t wait to see what this dog gets up to next!
