Steve Grieg, a compassionate animal enthusiast hailing from Colorado, has always been surrounded by a multitude of pets.
Growing up, his home was a haven for various animals, a tradition he carried into adulthood.
His large property, often bustling with three or four dogs at any given time, offered ample space for these furry companions to thrive.
Tragedy struck when one of Steve’s beloved dogs passed away.
The loss deeply affected him, prompting him to honor his pet’s memory in a unique way.
He visited his local animal shelter, not for a young, sprightly pup, but for the “least adoptable” dog.
His aim was to provide a loving home and a chance at a good life for a dog that others might overlook.
“So I adopted a 12-year-old Chihuahua named Eeyore with a heart murmur and four bad knees and I brought him home and that was just the beginning of all the animals,” Steve shared with The Dodo.
This marked the start of his journey of adopting animals in need, a journey that would transform his life in ways he could never have imagined.
Steve’s home soon became a sanctuary for 10 senior dogs, each with their own unique quirks and personalities.
But his compassion didn’t stop at dogs.
He expanded his animal family to include two pigeons and two ducks in need of a home.
A pig named Bikini, adopted from a friend who couldn’t keep her, also joined the mix.
Bikini, who amusingly believes she’s a dog, found a special friend in Steve’s Irish Wolfhound, Enoch.
A chance encounter with a rabbit in his front yard led to another addition to Steve’s ever-growing family.
The rabbit, surprisingly relaxed and easygoing, fit in perfectly with the rest of the dogs.
Steve’s home was slowly transforming into a haven for animals of all shapes and sizes.
Steve expressed his fondness for adopting senior dogs, citing their low-energy and well-behaved nature.
“They’re just wiser animals,” he said. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age.
These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”
To share his unique family with the world, Steve started an Instagram page, showcasing his “wolf gang.”
Steve was thrilled that his page was inspiring others to see the joy in adopting senior animals.
“They just make it feel like home. It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of.
It makes my days worthwhile,” Steve expressed.
His home, filled with the sounds of various animals, shows his love and dedication to these often overlooked creatures.
