There are few times in our lives where we are presented with an opportunity to be a hero. These situations don’t happen often and they allow us to look within and determine the type of person we are going to be. Are we going to look for others’ help or take action ourselves, even if it means some risk?

One man had one of these “hero” moments thrust upon him.

The moments never make themselves known in the moment. Even more, they are usually a surprise and force us to respond from instinct and character. In Dedham, Massachusetts, Peter Koska was heading to his car like any other day in his life.

While walking to his vehicle, he noticed that an SUV in the parking lot had burst into flames.

Seeing a car on fire isn’t part of most people’s regular schedules. For one, it normally only happens when there is a serious accident and for it to be happening in a parking lot was extremely abnormal. Instead of just calling the fire department and walking away, Peter decided to do a quick check and make sure everything was ok.

As Peter got closer, he realized the fire was growing.

With Peter getting closer to the car he realized that wasn’t a small fire. Looking to make sure everything was ok, he noticed a bit of movement coming from within the car. Peering through the smoke, he suddenly realized something terrible was happening.

Three dogs were stuck in the burning car.

With the seconds ticking by in slow motion, Peter leaped to action. Running towards the vehicle, he tried to figure out the best way to get the dogs out. He told CBS Boston:

“I figured, I have time to get in there and get them out,”

Thankfully, the door wasn’t locked and he was able to open it.

Opening the door was only the first step, however. The three dogs were terrified and only two of them got out of the car when he opened the door. Whether from fear or something else, the third dog, a Labradoodle, refused to get out of the car.

“The third, a labradoodle, didn’t want to come out,” he said. “So I reached in [and] grabbed them.”

Getting the third dog out of the car, he turned away and heard a BOOM.

As the last dog left the car, he walked away to the sound of the car being engulfed in flames and completely consumed. Peter had saved the lives of these three dogs.

The dogs were about to be taken on a walk by a dog walker.

Dog walking services are pretty popular today and one of these “walkers” had gone inside to grab the fourth dog to take on a walk. As she walked inside, she had no idea that the car had caught fire. Usually, accidents like this come from an issue with the radiator and the vehicle losing the ability to cool itself.

Regardless of the circumstances, Peter saved the lives of three dogs and made three families very happy.

The three owners of the dogs must have been overjoyed to hear the heroism of Peter! Saving the pups from a burning vehicle was dangerous but it was the right thing to do.
